Inspiring Careers : Julian Wee

The recently concluded Career Expo 2009 was a testament of hope & also struggle in this time of recession.

Julian Wee, a senior economist who grew up with cerebral palsy, shares with JobsDB.com
some advice and inspiration. Julian was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as child, In junior college, he became interested in government but had to work as a freelance writer in health & sports magazines to get by before finally landing his current job.

My childhood consisted of lots of therapy, and going to primary school was challenging as my mother had to quit her day job to accompany me to classes, so that she could help me with my daily needs, like going to the washroom.

Nevertheless, I really liked going to school and studying. I was also blessed with classmates, teachers and a principal who were all supportive and understanding too.

For those graduating in this current recession, Julian shares:

Of course it’s much better to graduate in times of boom rather than bust, but you just have to play the hand that you are dealt, I guess. Still, it can be a good time for fresh grads to keep their options open, and if finances aren’t really an issue, they can take the time to explore, experiment and find out what they are really interested in. Just go for it and see if it works for them.

How to Overcome Retrenchment

Andrew Taylor shares with JobsDB.com and John Wiley & Sons, his life as a freelance journalist, writer & business communications specialist after being retrenched from a stable job at DTV. He explains how he dealt with retrenchment and is now encouraging people to see it as an opportunity for exploration.

If someone tells you - as they often do - that being made redundant is the best thing that ever happened to them, they are not exactly lying, but they aren't telling you the whole truth either. The first reactions when it happened to me about five years ago were anger, disbelief, panic and fear, often all at the same time.

It was only a little later that I realised what an opportunity it might prove to be. I had been stuck for several years in a job which paid the bills all right, but which had long since ceased to enthuse me, and being eased out of it gave me the impetus I needed to go out and find something more rewarding.

On strategies to prepare oneself for retrenchment, he suggests:

1. Expanding your list of contacts
2. Keep yourself abreast of all the basic transferable skills
3. Build yourself a life outside work
4. Develop your self-confidence.

Career and Job Fair Do's and Don'ts

When attending job fairs & career expos, its important to have a have a strategy to maximize the experience, whether its in attending their free seminars or just simply deciding what kind of companies interest you and what don’t. Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D. offers career expo do’s and don’ts

• Do have a specific strategy for maximizing your time at the event. And don't bother spending time with recruiters from companies that do not interest you.
• Do pre-register for the event, and do attempt to get the list of attending companies before the career fair.
• Don't eliminate companies because they are recruiting for positions outside your field; take the time to network with the recruiter and get the name of a hiring manager for your particular career field.
• Do attempt to research basic information about each company you hope to interview with at the job fair. A common career fair question from recruiters is, “Why do you want to work for our company?”

You can apply all these and learn more at the JobsDB Singapore Career Expo 2009 20-22 March at the Suntec Convention Center Halls 602 & 603

NTUC First Campus - Inspiring Young Lives

One of a child's first ambitions is usually to become a teacher. This is due to the influence of a child's first teacher. Teaching, whether as a professor or as an early childhood educator is certainly seen as one of the most noble jobs as it involves knowledge and the ability to nurture.

NTUC First Campus is a community of teachers, parents and early childhood professionals working together to bring out the best in each child. JobsDB.com speaks to some of its members on the profession.

Eunice Tong, Little Skool-House-At-Tompson Principal shares:

My early childhood career with The Little Skool-House International (On-The-Green) began its journey since June 2005. I was the English Teacher to about 65 Kindergarten students. It wasn’t just about planning lessons and conducting activities, but also nurturing the little ones as unique individuals and fulfilling the potential of each child.
