Engineering and IT Jobs

Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 8.

Surely, you've heard of the cliche "the faster the better". We may not be fans of cliches in general, but that one, honestly, is our only way out now. We're kind of in a hurry and have no other choice but to make this quick. But we won't slack off! No matter the situation, the sickness of perfectionism kicks in. So yes, quality's still assured. Are you ready?

We haven't found a lot from our favourite news sources, thing is. By March we are predicting better updates on Singapore jobs, but for now, just keep up with the phase of Find Jobs at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/NewAdvanceSearch. Current top jobs include Singapore Accounting Jobs, Banking Jobs, Insurance Jobs, IT Jobs, and Engineer Jobs.

But it's not that we haven't found anything at all. Speaking of Engineering Jobs, we've read that experts are foreseeing that the completion of Seletar Aerospace Park will boost the engineering careers of those under the industries of Aerospace and Aviation. Hopefully, the park's influence will be as thorough as what Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands did to Singapore hospitality jobs. So...yes, those eying Aviation Jobs and Aerospace Jobs are advised to always update themselves with news about the park.

It's also been mentioned that job hunters of pharmaceutical jobs, energy jobs, biotechnology jobs, and chemical jobs, are in for a steady job hunt in the next quarter.

It appears that Public Service careers are also doing good, demand-wise. You probably should consider government jobs if you're looking into a change of career. Your transferable skills will be your key.

And that's it. But before you go, please go over these new announcements from our editors at sg.jobsdb.com:

Upcoming seminars from LearningDB.com:

01 Mar Connecting with Customers
02 Mar The Wonders of Microsoft Word
03 Mar Grammar Gold: Valuable Grammar Tips for Work
04 Mar Writing in Response to Complaints
04 Mar Savvy Business Networking Skills
04 Mar Win-win Negotiation Skills
07 Mar Outclass the Competition with Your Professional Image

Goal setting simplified.

So...it's been a while since we last had a silly conversation with you guys. These past few days, we've been taking things a little bit differently on this blog. That is, we've been writing more "professionally". Just hammering the point, in case you haven't noticed it yet... You see, we're trying to adjust to your standards of 'good reads'.

Honestly speaking, we kind of miss the lightness of our writing style before this 'professional' attempt. In relation to that, will you allow us to take things lightly at least once a week starting next week? Preferably, every Thursday before our Updates on Singapore Jobs? But well, it's not like we're forcing you to approve. You're the boss, after all.

Anyway, since Career Advice hasn't been updated yet, the smartest route for us to take for today, now that we've let our another "irrelevant' request, is to comment on a frequently asked question about career building or job hunting. How about"How do I set goals properly?" Are we good?

Goal setting may sound simple, but the fact is, many career professionals commit a mistake on this aspect. What is proper goal setting, anyway?

Career expert, Kamal Kant, has written "Reach Out for the Stars" at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/27.htm?ID=373 exclusively to clear these things out. How do you set goals properly? Three things:

  • Make them SMART: SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC, & TIME-BASED.
  • Mark a deadline. It will heighten your focus.
  • Track your progress at least weekly.

You have to write your goals as SMART or else, you'll waste your time. Marking a deadline is in order so you'll be forced to take action. Finally, if you don't track your progress, you're in danger of getting stuck at a deadend.

Pretty simple, huh? Reading these additional career resources can help:

Successful job hunting. (part 2)

It's a matter of using expert advice to make 'You' work for employers.

The specifics.

Career experts say no to fancy papers for resume. From the arts field or not, job seekers are expected to print their resumes in standard paper, so as to give ease to the recruiter in terms of spotting their strengths and qualifications. You'd have to understand that recruiters judge more than 50 resumes a day.

The same goes with the way one should write his resume. The "You' aspect in resume writing is all about wording one’s resume in such a way that it'll be able to present him as a good candidate to recruiters. The easiest technique for this is personalising it based on the job ad's details. Take note of the job requirements and highlight your skills that answer to those needs directly.

In terms of job interview, embracing the 'You' aspect comes in answering the questions properly. Don't just showcase how good you are to the employer as you please -- Consistency and clarity are important keywords to note here. Keep the interviewer interested by strategically wording your answer, may the question be inquiring about your weakness or vice versa, to suit you.

That’s why preparation is essential in this phase. You'd have to know a thing or two about the company to be able to word your statements according to their pursuits and sound good. The task also calls for you to memorise your resume inside and out to stay consistent.

Successful job hunting. (part 1 of 2)

It's a matter of using expert advice to make 'You' work for employers.

Resume writing is all about following the rule book, just like the key to acing job interviews is listening to experts advice; so you'd think excelling in the premise of job hunting meant acting all robotic and setting aside 'You'. A classic question we've wanted to answer for so long: Do I have no other choice but to stab myself with a double edged sword in order to emerge victorious in a quest for job? The short answer would be not really.

Following those that have been written and tested is essential, but may we reinstate the fact that job hunting is all about selling yourself. Don't solely orbit your pursuits around what's being dictated nor do everything as you please. Go in the middle. It's a matter of using expert advice to make 'You' work for employers.

If we were to make a list of things which would not, under any circumstances, be appropriate to job hunting, "not marketing yourself properly" would be somewhere near the top of it, right next to "doing it alone". But what is proper marketing in terms of job hunting, anyway?

In the marketing realm, to sell a product means to highlight that product's strengths and brandish those things about it that set it positively apart to its competitors. Job hunting is like that, only a bit more challenging, as you're up against not just two or three but thousands of competitions. Although, this is not to say that consumerism and job hunting are synonymous concepts. There are many striking similarities on the way things work for these two concepts, but here's the deal: in consumerism you're expected to be unexpected, which is by no means the case in job hunting. The principle of being unexpected in the former involves the use of creative words and the drawing of colorful ads to achieve a product that fits the trope, 'the physically striking the better'. In job hunting, things are much more internal.

How so? We'll discuss tomorrow. So stay tuned. In the meantime, we want you to study these career resources:

Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 7.

Wow. Just wow. It's sort of hard to believe that we've reached ed.7 already. Well, we're flaky. But at least we've improved in our prose? We effort every-time we write about Singapore jobs, after all.

Anyway, just to set the standards, we've researched a lot for today, so please take out your pen and notepad. Aside from that, we're also set to feature a recent press release about Singapore careers from Ambition. There's no reason for you to not read this wholly.

So, let's start?

The IRs are making a lot of noise. Not that this is a bad thing, though. Experts at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) say that both Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa has reaped returns that are higher than expected in the first nine months of last year. They are seeing a continuous expansion for these tourism establishments this year too, so we guess, everything's covered tourism jobs and hospitality jobs -wise?

Marina Bay Sands, in particular, has announced plans of expansion and it's currently lobbying the Singapore Government for more land. Job hunters in the tourism industry have nothing to worry about in terms of prospects.

It's been pinpointed that Q4 has not been good in terms of number of job advertisements yes, but that is due to the festive season. According to Andrea Ross, managing director of Robert Walters Singapore, number of management jobs, engineer jobs, architecture jobs, and technician jobs will remain steady in the coming quarters, enough to keep thousands of job hunters moving.

The MTI also reports that the sectors of retail, financial services, and manufacturing have also experienced growth. This only means one thing... a stable influx of retail jobs, finance jobs, bank jobs, and manufacturing jobs in the next quarter, unless something negatively big comes up.

How about Ambition's report? There is a good future waiting for job hunters of business development jobs, marketing jobs, SEO jobs, and accounting jobs in Singapore. You can read the complete report at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Asia.htm?ID=609.

For a change, we're leaving you with JUST some reminders from LearningDB.com:

21 Feb -- Amazing Sticky Presentations Quick Start
22 Feb -- Dealing with Difficult People and situations
23 Feb -- Achieving Peak Performance by Improving Your Memory
23 Feb -- Effective Credit Control & Speedy Debt Recovery
24 Feb -- Understanding Financial Statements for Non-Finance Personnel
24 Feb -- Stress and wellness management
24 Feb -- Raise your Game 2011
24 Feb -- Use of Social Media for Online Engagement
25 Feb -- Introduction to Consolidated Accounts
25 Feb -- Effective Technical Writing Skills
25 Feb -- Becoming Art of War CEO (session 1 of 6)
28 Feb -- Writing Effective Minutes

Revolutionise your job hunting. (Part 2)

We're wrapping up the career discussion with a bang!

The main benefit of networking is that it's a great way to get access to the hidden jobs market. As wide a jobs portal JobsDB is, there are still jobs that are out of its scope. As far as the task of getting more invites is concerned, actively networking while also continuously applying for jobs using the database is going to hand you gold, if nothing else.

Granted, this is hard work, but here's the thing: Double the effort, double the result. Take it from what professional Career Consultant, Paul Hastings has written in his “5 laws of successful career search” article at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/21.htm?ID=366: "You are embarking upon a marketing campaign, to secure for yourself a position that will allow you to achieve your fullest potential in the job market." So don't be discouraged with the load -- everything's for your progress anyway.

In the “10 questions to ask if you still haven't found a job” article by Katharine Hansen at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/10%20Questions?ID=375, it has been stated that passive methods of job hunting aren't enough to get you a job. Katherine has asked in the article: are you networking? "Take your resume everywhere and give it out to everyone you can. Try networking. "

Co-author of popular book Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0', David Perry also believes in the power of networking when it comes to upping a job hunter's chances in the landing a job department. "Network with the newly departed - Find former employees on Google, Linkedin, or your own network." You can read more at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Ask%20An%20Expert?ID=422.

News Watch has been established as a Career Advice staple for the same reason. It's so that the members are kept aware of what's happening around. The news will inform you the current in-demand skills and help you find alternatives, in case your choice of industry isn't as accommodating.

Revolutionise your job hunting. (Part 1 of 2)

There's a big difference between job hunting online and using the internet as a "tool" for the pursuit, and unfortunately this distinction seems to have been lost upon the job hunters of today, resulting to unnecessary frustrations. Has it been months since you started your job hunt? Are you not getting response despite having sent your resume multiple times? It simply means that it's time you open your eyes to the prospect of reading the news, networking and attending career events. Having interviewed many career experts already, JobsDB.com Singapore is more or less in the position to say that.

JobsDB.com Singapore is not in any way denying the fact that the addition of the internet in the recruitment picture has made things easier. Yes it did, and it continues to do so. However, it seems to have placed a wrong notion in the general public's mindset in terms of going about the task of finding a job. For one, not all jobs are advertised online and secondly, as popular the Singapore job market is, it's hard to imagine how many people are competing for a single job ad. In order to widen your chances of getting contacted for an interview, put down how you see the internet in your search and look into the prospect of trying other strategies.

The reason why JobsDB.com Singapore has Career Expo, Career Events and LearningDB.com is because it believes in the fact that to get better results, job hunting should be done via multiple strategies, strategies that go beyond the 'conveniences' the cyberspace offers, which means you shouldn't just browse the internet to reach openings. The JobsDB database is always updated for the purpose of keeping your job search active, but through the likes of banner ads, the site also encourages you to be open to attending seminars. This is so that you can up your qualifications as well as meet new people for the sake of networking.

You'll learn more about networking and Career Advice in part two. Stay tuned! While waiting, we recommend the following:

Self Assessments? Career Positioning?

It's been so long since we last featured an article about job hunting (that's comprehensive) on this blog. We have to do something.

Okay, our brains are still in tact and very much capable of coming up with intelligent sentences. Considering that Career Advice has just been updated with another job hunting article, we have no reason to not do... this... thing.

Not that we're against the idea, but we guess, we're just afraid to miss the point of the article entirely? Well, we lack sleep (again). Anyway, Ms. Christie Khoo's advice for job hunters is very related to our belief of "applying only to job ads you're qualified for", so we'll probably do good?

The General Manager of Recruit Strategy Pte Ltd is also a regular contributor at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerIndex. We've mentioned her name a lot of times already over here, so if you've been watching our actions since a long time ago, you should find her name familiar at least. In her latest career article contribution, Christie emphasizes the importance of making strategies in positioning yourself to your prospective employer.

They've modeled their company's search process after the Sun Tzu Art of War strategies, according to Christie. Summarizing everything into five points, Christie encourages job hunters to consider positioning themselves based on the factors of "moral", "climate", "terrain", "leadership", and "discipline" before they start their next set of job applications.

It will be beneficial for you to self assess, in other words. Sample reflection questions from her per factors:

Moral
Instead of simply saying you are hardworking; go further by sharing an example of the time that you had stayed up doing extra research to ensure that you will be able to present the best information for that all-important project presentation.

Climate
Share one or two memorable learning experiences during the time spent within the various academic institutions that you had previously attended.

Terrain
If you had previously been in the frontline service or sales positions, share your discoveries on the importance of customer service standards and interpersonal communication skills and how you are keen to be utilizing these learning in the Personal Banker position that you are applying for.

Leadership
If you had always been learning the piano and enjoy music, speak about this and how you see that this passion of yours is the same passion that you are able to bring into your job – where you see yourself stepping up and bringing people together for respective causes; taking the initiative basically.

Discipline
If your vision for yourself is to be a private banker, then share with the interviewer or write it in your resume citing joining and pursuing a banking career as the motivating factor for yourself.

Another must-read article from Christie:

Strategies to Beat the Recession Blues

You're not new to self assessments, right? So this won't be hard. It's a favourite topic of ours and we have a penchant on writing about it.

Christie's exercise will require time, but basically, it's all about marketing yourself in the best way possible to the employer. How can you market yourself like this if you've applied for a position you're not really qualified for? That's the idea.

We interrupt our regular programming for this learning and development update.

We feel bad. And it's not because we lack sleep. You guys know we're in graduate school, right? Nothing's really wrong with our schooling, but a "zero is a zero" and can never a good thing for perfectionists. Granted, it's not yet the end of the world and we still have a second chance, but gosh, that zero has really left a big dent on our class standing. Not to mention, on our pride bank. Comment on this later and make us feel happy.

Anyway, we don't have plans on bugging you with too much information this morning. Our agenda is simple: to remind you of www.learningdb.com.sg. Have you passed the URL to your boss?

Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 6.

Everything went well last night. So yes, no rants for today! Does this mean we've found lots of industry news to share? Hmm. Not really. Remember, we're still waiting for March? But still, read. You're going to make us REALLY happy if you do.

So, what's up? How's the Singapore job market doing? Great, particularity because of the hospitality industry. We're being uncharacteristically optimistic just because of it.

We've read from our favourite news resources that tourism in Singapore has created a new record in terms of sales. We don't want to sound redundant but, spearheaded by Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, we're expecting a stable influx of hospitality jobs until the end of the quarter, and hopefully, beyond. More food jobs, hotel jobs, resort jobs, casino jobs, travel jobs, and tourism jobs coming up!

Job hunters of bank jobs and finance jobs need not worry about running out of prospects to consider too. A surge in banking jobs is expected by experts as the local banks are seen to do good in the coming quarters.

But is tourism and banking the only accommodating job sectors now? As far as the news is concerned, yes, but our database is a good reference for market outlook as well. And currently, it's keeping accounting jobs, admin jobs, marketing jobs, insurance jobs, engineer jobs, education jobs, and IT jobs in Singapore in large numbers. You know where we're getting at, right?

That's....it? Hey, we didn't say we'd surprise you. But this new partner of sg.jobsdb.com will probably catch the interest of banker job hunters out there:

What to do while serving the one-month notice period.

Not getting enough sleep is bad, but oversleeping, we've realized a hard way, is worse. It's true what they say... sleeping too much will make you feel puffy the next morning.

But here's the thing, what's set for today is a favourite. We feel weird, but we won't slack off. Our pride's getting in the way. This can be considered a follow-up to yesterday's discussion on career changing. Have you answered "yes" to all the entries in the checklist? Do you already have a resignation schedule in mind?

Please continue reading. We're not going to discourage you or anything. Before a serious misunderstanding rears its head, let us make it clear that what we're set to talk about today does not have anything to do with negativity. How can one make the most out of his one-month notice period? What should one do while serving this period? Here are five suggestions from us:

  • Do your tasks like the usual. Or better yet, boost up. Especially if you've worked there for many years, this is a great way to show your gratuity to the company.
  • Update your network. In today's work world, networking is a useful tool in career building. That girl you used to seat beside with might be the one to point you to your dream job in the future. You never know.
  • Have unused leaves? Use them to relax, specially if they're not convertible to cash. But we're not saying do not show up anymore during the notice period. Schedule strategically. Remember, we still want you to work like the usual.
  • Review your references. Even if you already have a job waiting for you. It will help in your future career plans.
  • During your free time (your boss may give you less work during this time), surf the net for industry news, training courses and discussions with career experts. No games! Spend it wisely. Keeping up with the latest goings on and updating your skills are a must; you may not find the time to do so in your new career (don't think of this as a threat, though).

Checklist for a career change.

Are there any studies linking lack of sleep with feeling enthusiastic the next day? We'd like to know because well, we haven't slept a wink in 30 hours yet we feel rather giddy right now. It's weird...we're weird. But at least you can be sure your time will not be wasted today, right?

Something to do with what's set to be discussed? Probably. Because we really are in love with career changing as a topic. If you've been following us for quite a while now, you should know. Anyway, the rabbit year has just arrived. It's a fresh start and many are thinking of moving on in their careers. But is the rabbit year really a good time to execute a career change plan? Because how we interpret the rabbit year is different. Remember our LNY post?

From an accounting job to a teacher job? Or perhaps your plan is to move from an engineer job to an IT career? Very technical, right? So, let's not use the LNY mindset to resolve the issue at hand. There is not a single date in the calendar that can assure you a successful transition to another career, the thing is. You shall depend your decision on your financial and emotional being.

That is, of course, unless you have no job offer waiting for you. Competition has never been this tight in the Singapore job market, so you will probably find yourself job searching for months. After all, you'll be facing individuals who have solid experiences on the field. Are your savings enough to get you and your family going for at least six months?

Stress comes with being jobless for a long time. And it is a different kind of stress, mind you. So, it is important that you consider your emotional being before your throw in the towel. Are you sure you can withstand the rush that being jobless will give you?

Career consultant, Valerie Young, advises: "If the thought of just up and quitting your day job frightens you, start building your client base on the side. Begin with low-risk steps and gradually work your way up to the harder stuff."

More points to ponder on? If you have more time to spare, please read this article at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/career%20events?ID=290. This has been written to provide insights for those seeking to change jobs like you.

But basically (because we're all for your convenience), here's a checklist to help you decide if you're really ready to move on to another field.
  • Is this "it"? We mean, do you see yourself doing this "new prospect" until retirement?
  • Are your savings enough to get you and your family moving while you're out of pay? Do you need loans?
  • Is your network updated?
  • Are you done fishing for mediums to find job ads?

You beg to disagree on a certain point? You have suggestion on how we can improve our checklist? Just use the comments section.

Stressed out?

We've been moderating this blog for more than a year now. So, the issue is no longer about "How should I write?" but rather, "What should I write next?". We may not be immune to verbal diarrhea, but to tell you honestly, we're running out of blogging ideas. In short, we don't know what to write about anymore. The realm of career is not really the most open when it comes to creativity (you know...), and we feel that we've already tackled everything that's there. Recycling is the only way to cope up with the task, or do you have suggestions?

Yes, we need your help! How about you share with us your thoughts on career building or job hunting and we'll comment on them? Or you can just post a question at the comments section below and we'll try our best to respond? These are just ideas and you may do something else to help us with our dilemma as long as it's not defamatory and it's career-related. Are we good?

Boy, that sounded rather defensive. But really, we're in need of assistance when it comes to ideas. We don't want to recycle so much if only because we've grown to love this blog like no one would believe. Anyway, now that we're done semi-ranting on this THING that has been bugging us since 2011 has reared its head, we can follow our schedule better.

Just to make our objectives for today clear, the topic of stress management have been set for discussion! Yey!

See, it's not a new topic. And we've already written loads about it over here. But you can make it better!

But that's beside the point NOW and...let's go back to the real topic at hand? Managing stress? Yes?

Stress is a normal part of life for career professionals. But getting loads of it everyday can be dangerous. It's why the concept of stress management exists. So you'll know how to wheeze through such dangerous elements with ease.

Right now, we're getting copious amounts of stress from graduate studies and some co-workers. Just so you know...you're probably curious to know what's behind our uncharacteristic enthusiasm today. What's keeping us moving? Career Advice. We discuss elements of sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerIndex over here at least three times a week for a reason. We hope you've already realized that way before or else we'll feel really bad.

Anyway, Career Advice keeps many articles on stress from career experts. These tips from Kelly Services which are contained in this article at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Managing Stress?ID=570 are the best, we think:

  • Try to identify your own stress triggers
  • Adopt techniques which work for you - we all cope with stress differently
  • Be aware of your own symptoms of stress
  • Accept yourself and don't try to be perfect
  • Take action to tackle your problems
  • Looks after yourself physically and mentally
  • Be positive
