Inspiring Careers : Julian Wee

The recently concluded Career Expo 2009 was a testament of hope & also struggle in this time of recession.

Julian Wee, a senior economist who grew up with cerebral palsy, shares with JobsDB.com
some advice and inspiration. Julian was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as child, In junior college, he became interested in government but had to work as a freelance writer in health & sports magazines to get by before finally landing his current job.

My childhood consisted of lots of therapy, and going to primary school was challenging as my mother had to quit her day job to accompany me to classes, so that she could help me with my daily needs, like going to the washroom.

Nevertheless, I really liked going to school and studying. I was also blessed with classmates, teachers and a principal who were all supportive and understanding too.

For those graduating in this current recession, Julian shares:

Of course it’s much better to graduate in times of boom rather than bust, but you just have to play the hand that you are dealt, I guess. Still, it can be a good time for fresh grads to keep their options open, and if finances aren’t really an issue, they can take the time to explore, experiment and find out what they are really interested in. Just go for it and see if it works for them.

How to Overcome Retrenchment

Andrew Taylor shares with JobsDB.com and John Wiley & Sons, his life as a freelance journalist, writer & business communications specialist after being retrenched from a stable job at DTV. He explains how he dealt with retrenchment and is now encouraging people to see it as an opportunity for exploration.

If someone tells you - as they often do - that being made redundant is the best thing that ever happened to them, they are not exactly lying, but they aren't telling you the whole truth either. The first reactions when it happened to me about five years ago were anger, disbelief, panic and fear, often all at the same time.

It was only a little later that I realised what an opportunity it might prove to be. I had been stuck for several years in a job which paid the bills all right, but which had long since ceased to enthuse me, and being eased out of it gave me the impetus I needed to go out and find something more rewarding.

On strategies to prepare oneself for retrenchment, he suggests:

1. Expanding your list of contacts
2. Keep yourself abreast of all the basic transferable skills
3. Build yourself a life outside work
4. Develop your self-confidence.

Career and Job Fair Do's and Don'ts

When attending job fairs & career expos, its important to have a have a strategy to maximize the experience, whether its in attending their free seminars or just simply deciding what kind of companies interest you and what don’t. Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D. offers career expo do’s and don’ts

• Do have a specific strategy for maximizing your time at the event. And don't bother spending time with recruiters from companies that do not interest you.
• Do pre-register for the event, and do attempt to get the list of attending companies before the career fair.
• Don't eliminate companies because they are recruiting for positions outside your field; take the time to network with the recruiter and get the name of a hiring manager for your particular career field.
• Do attempt to research basic information about each company you hope to interview with at the job fair. A common career fair question from recruiters is, “Why do you want to work for our company?”

You can apply all these and learn more at the JobsDB Singapore Career Expo 2009 20-22 March at the Suntec Convention Center Halls 602 & 603

NTUC First Campus - Inspiring Young Lives

One of a child's first ambitions is usually to become a teacher. This is due to the influence of a child's first teacher. Teaching, whether as a professor or as an early childhood educator is certainly seen as one of the most noble jobs as it involves knowledge and the ability to nurture.

NTUC First Campus is a community of teachers, parents and early childhood professionals working together to bring out the best in each child. JobsDB.com speaks to some of its members on the profession.

Eunice Tong, Little Skool-House-At-Tompson Principal shares:

My early childhood career with The Little Skool-House International (On-The-Green) began its journey since June 2005. I was the English Teacher to about 65 Kindergarten students. It wasn’t just about planning lessons and conducting activities, but also nurturing the little ones as unique individuals and fulfilling the potential of each child.

Understanding people, rethinking employee motivation in the age of Facebook and blogs

In an insightful article, Micheal Vavakis, HR Vice President for Hewlett Packard shares with JobsDB innovative HR strategies in the digital age.

But as the workplace evolves, the notion of ‘going to work’ has become less relevant as work is no longer about the location but the results delivered. Hence, trying to balance the number of hours one spends in the office versus the home is no longer as critical. The notion of work life balance will increasingly be passé as what is truly needed will be workplace policies that propagate work life integration.

The key to capitalising on this transformation, is again, in capturing the ‘I’ component. This is possible by structuring workplace policies that is underlined by trust and respect of the individual. Concepts such as flexi-time, condensed working hours, part time or job share have been practiced for many years now but there is still need for a more progressive mindset in management to recognise and reward the benefits that these practices bring to the company.

So, you want to be a successful expatriate and global consultant? Here’s how…

Omar Khan is a globally acknowledged leadership development innovator and success coach. He is a sought after change catalyst and a pioneer in transformational learning. Omar shares his thoughts with JobsDB.com.

Omar, what are the challenges of working in different countries, with different corporate cultures?

First, it is to understand the market, the context for business there, and the drivers of success. Some of these are universal, others are more local. More than one corporate giant has foundered in China for example, by not understanding the diverse demand and buying patterns that operate across regions.

Second, understand how to connect with the customers and consumers, and the emotional as well as rational drivers for them. What are their problems? What kinds of lives do they lead? How can you become a student of their ‘hot buttons’ (motivators) as well as ‘red flags’ (warning signals and turn-offs)?

Third, understand your own team. They will have learned to deliver in a more or less global environment based on the type of company you have. But they will need to be recognized, stimulated, coached, and incentivized in ways that are meaningful to them. The fastest way to get respect from a new team is to ask them to teach you what has been working for them, before you fix it, change it, or enhance it. Learn first, make an impact next.

Your job is ultimately to shape a corporate culture, not kow-tow to it. But you have to understand what you are seeking to change and why. Then you can pick your battles and make sure there is a compelling cause behind what you are seeking to accomplish and asking others to help you to do.

dj glenn ong shares his success story on jobsdb campus

Versatile. Engaging. Shocking… but never boring. Talented DJ, Glenn Ong, has been spicing up our Singapore airwaves for the last 14 years, and he’s constantly keeping it real by re-inventing himself all the time.

You could even say that Glenn is everywhere you go these days… be it on TV or gracing the cover of a magazine looking smart in a suit with his beautiful wife Jamie. Nevertheless, Glenn always maintains his mysterious charm and enigmatic presence with his signature shades on.
Glenn currently hosts ‘The Morning Express’ on Class 95 FM with The Flying Dutchman (THE FD) aka Mark Van Cuylenberg, and JobsDB Campus chats with Glenn to find out more about his road to success.

Glenn, what inspired you to become a DJ (Disc Jockey)?
I’ve always wanted to be a DJ since I was young, and I would often make my own recordings on cassette tapes. When my family members heard some of the tapes, they felt that I had DJ potential and encouraged me to take it further. So that’s when I sent in a demo tape to Lucy Leong, who was the head of SBC radio. To my surprise, she called me in for a chat and wanted to give me a shot at being a DJ. However, I was only in Secondary 4 at the time, so she asked me to apply again in 2 years.

Two years later, I applied again and this time it was all good. Lucy even enrolled me in a 2 week radio course, where I received professional speech training from an Australian teacher. It was great and really helped me with my confidence and presenting techniques. Then my NS (National Service) call-up had to come along and disrupt my plans again – I was posted to a Combat unit and therefore could not be exempted to join the Forces 55 army radio show as a DJ. By the time I finished NS two and a half years later, there were no more openings at the radio station.

sgCarMart - The Only Place for Smart Car Buyers

A lot of .com ideas are a combination of Information Technology and passion. Vincent Tan, founder and Business Development Manager of sgCarMart.com did just that.

“The idea for a car website was first conceived while I was still studying for my Mechanical Engineering degree at University.”

He shares that going into the IT and setting up what is now the largest Automotive website was not easy.

“Car dealers were used to the traditional way of advertising (newspapers) and many were reluctant to adopt this new approach of advertising online, so we had to educate them on the convenience and cost advantages of using our website as opposed to print classifieds.”
