Looking to move your career forward? Contemplate on these questions. -part 1 of 2-

We're back! So...what's up. Did you miss us? Heh. We're just trying to lighten up the mood before we go on with the serious stuff, so we won't cause too much stress. Not that stress is a bad thing, though; remember what we said the last time, no, two weeks ago? Silver lining POV: stress is a sign that your career is advancing.

Anyway, today's agenda has nothing to do with stress management, so we might as well stop now. What are we set to talk about, anyway? We're thinking of using reverse psychology again: instead of answering career questions, it would probably make more dent if we're the ones to ask them. We'd like to call this portion... "sg.jobsdb.com would like to ask..."

What do you want for your future?
We all have plans for the future -- we want you to polish yours to make them full time goals. Because they denote vision and initiative, goals have a lot to do with your career. They say that those with goals are more likely to succeed than those without. Goals keep schedules organized, need we say more?

How do you find your current salary? Good enough or too low? If yours is low, how are you planning to double it?
In topics involving career, salary talks is never out of question. Salary is what motivates some people into working, in the first place. How about you? But regardless of how you view salary in your career, your paycheck should be respectful of your skills set and experience as a professional. Research. If the result of your research suggests that you deserve more, set a meeting with your boss.

Are you ready for the risks?
Career moves involve risks. But always playing safe will not do your career any good. Remember that nothing is obtained without sacrifices. If you think it’s for the good, go for it.

Are you open to taking "outside" assignments?
Versatility is what we're hinting in this question. Just like organization and initiative, versatility is also a top consideration in employee evaluations. But there's a limit to this. If your current schedule allows outside tasks, then good for you. If not, forcing it open will only make the wound worse. We suggest you do alternatives. One good suggestion is bringing in more inputs to meetings, which brings us to...

Do you read the news?
Periodicals are great career resources. You can get a lot from habitually reading news, but the biggest benefit of doing this is it will help you formulate logical suggestions for meetings.

BTW, for those asking, sending of entries for Snap&Win extends until April 3. More info at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/en/StaticContentFullContainer/careerexpo2011/jobseeker/snap-and-win.html. Career Expo 2011! Enough said.

Okay, Career Expo 2011 starts today, so we'll make this quick. We don't want to interrupt your job hunting, of course.

What better way to get you in a very good job hunting mood for the Singapore job fair but to post good industry news. Though we haven't found interesting bits in relation to job openings, this is, we believe, good enough to be shared for motivation's sake:

Jane Ng, correspondent to Straits Times, shared:

"WITH the economic recovery, the Class of 2010 from the three local universities are reporting higher employment rates and better starting salaries compared to graduates from the year before."

Fresh graduates, if anything, should get motivated for their job search at the career fair. Should we expect a high hiring rate of fresh graduates at the aftermath?

Anyway, if you want to read more news, just visit News Watch. And can we resume talking about Career Expo 2011 now?

Remember our Ipad contest? In our tweet yesterday, we congratulated Koek Seow Kiang for winning an iPad after preregistering at http://www.careerexpo.com.sg. Feel bad for not winning? Don't be because we're giving away three more, plus other prizes!

For those interested with the iPad...we're drawing one lucky jobseeker each day! Guidelines as posted at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/en/StaticContentFullContainer/careerexpo2011/jobseeker/daily-lucky-draw.html

1. Drop your registration form in the lucky draw box at JobsDB.com Booth (Level 4) after registration.
2. Daily draw happens at 6pm!
3. Winner has to be present to collect the prize! So stay around!
4. Winner has to present NRIC/FIN/Passport for verification.

Snap & Win is another contest that you should participate in. All you have to do is SNAP a photo of yourself at the JobsDB booth during the dair, and submit your photo(s) to us via email at ce2011@jobsdb.com.sg with the following details: NAME (as in NRIC/ PASSPORT) | NRIC/ PASSPORT NO. | EMAIL | CONTACT NO. All entries must reach us by April 3, 2011, 23:59 hours. The following prizes await lucky senders:

8GB Ipod Nano
Canon EOS 1100D
$50 Takashimaya vouchers

More info at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/en/StaticContentFullContainer/careerexpo2011/jobseeker/snap-and-win.html. You can also get details on our Snap&Win Facebook Tab at http://www.facebook.com/JobsDB.com.sg?sk=app_209546742392039.

Yet another commentary on the topic of career change

For the first time since this month started, we're not stressed. Perhaps it's really true what they say....that a good night sleep is worth more than a luxury. How about you? Did you get a good night sleep? We know these aren't career questions, but we're just being true to our promises.

Late last year, we remember doing this almost everyday. We can definitely say that it's because of our knack for lighthearted conversations that we're still here and this blog's still as active as ever. But we do hope you understand why we've not been "like that" for a long time.

Anyway, what's up? What are we planning to talk about today, anyway? Career development? Goal setting? Or perhaps, another topic in relation to job hunting? It's something we've long made a stand on, so you won't be surprised of the outcome. Do you remember our stand regarding Career change? What is it again?

Right, go if the situation really calls for it. If not, well, in today's ultracompetitive job market, it's better to play everything safe. Our interest to this topic came back after reading this new article from Hays Singapore at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Workplace%20matching?ID=691, wherein the recruiting experts advised Singapore employers that consistency is the key to keep turnover levels low.

The advice was given in relation to the results of their recent employee survey. It seems that majority of career professionals in Singapore are happy with their work conditions now.

If you were to be asked the question, what would you answer? It's interesting to know. Feel free to use the comments section below to expound on your thoughts. We'll be waiting.

Dealing with stress during career advancement. -Part 2 of 2-

Yesterday, we talked about stress in relation to having a dirty desk. Today, we'll discuss work life balance, office politics, getting a coach, and happy thoughts.

Having a healthy work life balance is a great way to get rid of stress. Schedule your tasks to be able to work more efficiently. You can avoid overtimes and "homeworks" by doing that. Time management will do wonders. A daily planner, for instance, can help you see your work in perspective. It will also assist you in dividing large projects into smaller ones, when the situation calls for such an action.

Be at home when at home. Do not let work stress ruin your family life. Use your time at home to unwind. Go out with your family for some amusement or if you prefer the comforts of home, watch movies with them or play board games --anything that could get your mind off of office-related things.

Unlike other causes of stress, you can't do anything to get rid of annoying co-workers.
Just pretend that their influences don't exist. They are gossiping about you? Let that motivate you to improve your performance. Impress your boss by showing him that you are professional when it comes to handling office politics, despite the stress it brings.

If your brand of stress can't be fixed by personal adjustments, we suggest you get a coach. This may cost money but the additional benefits make every cent worth it. With a career coach, not only will you get your stress problems fixed with tested stress busting techniques but also learn how to manage goals properly.

Another thing that you can do to fight off stress is to enroll yourself to relaxation practices. Do yoga, three times a week after work, for example. Or if you don't want to spend, listen to classic music while driving back home.

And lastly, free your mind from anything negative while at work. Always think happy thoughts, as a popular saying goes. Your desk may be organized or you may be good at scheduling, but if you keep on blabbering about traffic and your inconsiderate neighbors, what's the point? Focus on the positive aspects of your work. However, if your job is really eating you out, don't hesitate to plan to transfer roles within the company.

Dealing with stress during career advancement. -Part 1 of 2-

Stress is a sign that your career is advancing. Getting additional responsibilities means that you are trusted more by your boss, right? But don't get us wrong, we're not saying that stress is a good thing nor are we suggesting you to seek stress, if you're free from it as of speaking, in order to instigate career advancement. We're just recognizing the silver lining of this dark cloud situation.

Yes, we still consider stress as a dark cloud. Ironic it may be, but stress is a unique sign of career advancement -- you're not supposed to do things to prolong its effects on you. Instead get rid of them in order to continue advancing. Put it along these lines: everyone looks forward to college graduation, right? But it's a sign that you need to be more mature in your actions from that point on. Think of stress in relation to your growing career in that essence; just make the consequences of inaction more serious.

A dirty desk is one source of stress. It's impossible to work properly in a desk that speaks of chaos. Schedule a major clean-up, the next time you’re free from major tasks or meetings. We prefer a desk free from any unnecessary item. Get rid of those unneeded papers. And, if they eat space, remove some of your displays. We recommend you to read "Detox Your Desk by Theo Theobald & Cary Coop. You can read about the book at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/career-coaching-on-effect?ID=45

We'll leave you with that challenge for now. But please stay tuned for part 2 because we'll discuss stress in relation to work life balance.

Learning and development.

We guess, we're officially back? Our schedule has been quite hectic these past few weeks, so we hope you guys understand our position right now... why it's only now that we've talked like this unlike before. But well, it's not like we've completely abandoned this little space on the web. Right? Right?

Fresh graduates, read this. How you can go about the school to work world transition smoothly. (Part 3 of 5)

Why this post? It wasn't that we intended to make a fuzz. The plan was really to get today over with by instigating another lighthearted conversation. But we HAVE to make a follow up on our fresh graduates series today. As you know, finishing it is a bigger priority and we just happen to forget. How about we suspend the talk until Monday next week? It figures that our workload will be lighter next week...so, yes, will you wait?

Anyway, we don't want to grumble anymore. What's part three about? We're done talking about choosing job ads to apply to and resume writing. You ought to know what's the next step.

From school to the work world -- 'tis a very crucial transition. But there's no reason for you to freak out; just follow what your seniors and the career experts are telling. JobsDB.com Singapore wants to make things easier for you and so here's a detailed outline of the steps that you'll have to pass to get to your destination.

STEP THREE: Prepare for job interviews

Don't be surprised, but we only have one thing to say regarding this: Preparation is the key. Too troublesome? You won't want to put to waste all the editing you've done in step two. Here's the thing, to get yourself to formulate good answers, you need to research. Practising will prevent you from fidgeting and give you a self confident brand, which is good.

Employers also give importance to punctuality. Preparing in terms of what you'll wear for the appointment and how to get to the office in question the day before can do wonders.

How can researching help you make good answers? It will teach you how to answer the most common interview questions properly, for one. Researching will also help you incorporate the pursuits of the company interviewing you with your own.

Of catching up and learning...

We may be stressed out, but we refuse to give up on this blog if only because we consider it our own child. Uncanny affinity? Well, yes. But we suppose, anyone who has been put to our situations will feel the same. We've moderated Jobs in Singapore since 2009; to leave it behind just because...of some...things is to cause pain to the heart.

Now that we've found the time to get another healthy conversation going, will you listen? We've fallen short of expectations in relation to Singapore job updates last week...we know, but really, we've been busy and we hope you guys understand. We're more than willing to make up for it now, isn't it obvious?

Anyway, there's not much on the news today except for SM Goh 's recent discussion of the aviation industry which could potentially create better career opportunities for job seekers of aviation jobs, airline jobs, and aerospace jobs and a recent finding about the boost of sales in the retail industry, but Career Advice has new articles that could make up for the lack.

In case you haven't heard of them yet, we've got new features on News Watch and Industry Focus, all timely and potentially helpful to your career.

Dyson

This Industry Focus feature has been made to serve two purposes: to provide career advice for career professionals in the manufacturing industry and to announce that Dyson is hiring. Do you have what it takes to succeed in a Dyson job?

On the move: Global workforce mobility

For recruiting professionals in need of insights.

International Women’s Day – Celebrating Opportunity in Singapore

To commemorate International Women's Day, here's an article by Helen Brand, chief executive of ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) encouraging corporations to firm up the career prospects of their women executives. Business performance is at stake.

Because Career Advice does not rest, you can expect more career articles to come, perhaps, next week. Have you already bookmarked http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerIndex?

Fresh graduates, read this. How you can go about the school to work world transition smoothly. (Part 2 of 5)

From school to the work world -- 'tis a very crucial transition. But there's no reason for you to freak out; just follow what your seniors and the career experts are telling. JobsDB.com Singapore wants to make things easier for you and so here's a detailed outline of the steps that you'll have to pass to get to your destination.

STEP TWO: Create your resume

We’re not going to give you a checklist of do's and don'ts here, so save that snide for something else. Do what your school counselors at school have taught you. As for what we've written below, use them to polish your draft.

Clicking on Career Advice
will take you to our highly recommended resume writing tips from popular trainer, Sandra Sandu-Reeves. In her book, Getting Ahead in your Career, Sandra argues that personalisation is the key to resume writing. This is the reason why we want you to follow what you've learned from school for your first draft.

Review what you've done so far. Are there typos and misspellings? Correct them. This is our first editing task for you.

• Name, address, contact telephone number and e-mail address
• Personal data
• A summary of your work history, roles, experiences, and achievements
• Summary of your professional qualifications and memberships
• Summary of your educational history

Those are must-include details in resumes, according to Sarah Histed-Shergill in her article that we've featured on Career Guide. Our second task for you is to check whether you have them all.

Done? Next, have you highlighted your strengths? Companies judge candidates through skills. Make sure yours outlines your competencies properly so you can make yourself more noticeable.

A run-of-the-mill approach will not do you any favors. You will use what you've done so far as a template for your applications. Get back to your list (the one we've asked you to do in step one) and read the job profile of each of the openings you've listed there carefully. Make edits for each advertisement.

Of course a cover letter for each application is out question. Will this make a difference? Yes. A cover letter can bring your resume into sharper focus, Katharine Hansen believes so in her article that we've also featured on Career Guide. You may search for templates online if you don't know where to start.

STEP ONE: Choose your path
Needless to say, your first task is to find suitable job openings. Browse through our jobs database (of course, you're free to use other resources too) and then list down the items that appeals the most to you. Of course, when picking, you should be mindful of your qualifications. We'll be asking you to use the list in a later step.

Why preparation is essential in the interview phase of job hunting. -part 3 of 3- Plus, updates on Singapore jobs.

If you pay attention to our blog or read it once in a while, you may know why we're strong advocates of preparation. Being specific is the safest strategy to embrace. Many tips are available on excelling job interviews as much as the other topic, but only a few can prove to be good to your pursuit. Ignore the rest of the others or you'll blow up your chance of getting the job altogether. We're not saying don't read and follow tips, but use only the ones you think go along well with the preferences of the company that has invited you and of course, yours.

Research about the company so that you'll know how you can incorporate your goals with theirs. To accomplish this, there’s the need for you to study your resume carefully as well. We also want you to take the time to know about the most common job interview questions. You never know -- recruiters like using these questions because they make everything faster.

Updates:

Because we can't let the week pass without giving you updates.... That's public service at its finest.

Anyway, we've read about the plans of Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to boost the construction industry. This is good news for job hunters of building jobs and construction jobs, needless to say. We're pretty excited to share this because well, we haven't written about this industry for a long time. Here's to cheer you guys up.

The most aggressive employers are the IRs, which are continuously looking for ways to further their services. Resorts World Sentosa, in particular, is looking to fill more or less 1,000 job positions in time for the launch of its oceanarium.

Financial services jobs are also in demand, a nod to the fact that the consumer banking business has grown 17% last year.

As for other important things...

Why preparation is essential in the interview phase of job hunting. -part 2 of 3-

Highlights: "Should you come early or just at the right time?" || "To dress up or go for the safest pieces in your wardrobe?" || "Should you talk about your hobbies too or just focus on your strengths?"

It's a standard for critics to say that "the bar has been set awfully low", when expressing disregard on some field whose past products, most of them, are in the low quality side. The bar is what denotes "the standard" or what measures good and bad and right and wrong on the field from which the thing they're reviewing traces its roots. In job interview, it seems that there's no bar to begin with... which brings to table our issue. There are no safe grounds due to an absence of something to refer to as a standard… it seems. This can only mean two things to the average job hunter: "confusion" and ""panic". Who is to be trusted?

If you'd ask a hundred recruiters the question of "Should you come early or just at the right time?", you'd most likely get a 50-50 response. Some recruiters think that it's better to be too early than late, but others think that seeing the candidate earlier than them is pressuring. And that's not the only question where recruiters are divided by opinion.

Should you outdress everyone or go for a semi formal abode to avoid catching too much attention? Should you talk about your hobbies too or just focus on your strengths? These are just some of the many job interview questions that recruiters have different views on, properly endorsing the fact that there is no standard rule when it comes to acing a job interview. To swim in the middle? In today's competitive job market, that's really not something good.

Tomorrow, we'll have this complete. Plus, of course, some updates on Singapore jobs. In the meantime, read these career resources:

Why preparation is essential in the interview phase of job hunting. -Introduction-

The truly stressing thing about the job interview phase of job hunting is that, there’s no easy way out of it. The phase calls for extra precaution on the part of the job seeker. Do everything seriously (and with extra precaution, for that matter) or end up plummeting to a dead end situation. As far as tips on the subject matter are concerned, only a few can be called "universal", unlike in the resume writing realm where it’s less stressing to choose which to follow: tips like "don't go for bullets" and "highlight your achievements and objectives" are being cited by experts and recruiters like they're common knowledge, like they’re a universal belief.

We should probably start this article with a disclaimer: We've always had a thing about job hunting, and over the years have developed a penchant for job interview as a topic of discourse. Not that we don't acknowledge "arrive early" and "dress to impress" as relevant tips (clearly, they're as popular as the resume writing points we've mentioned in the paragraph above), but we've observed: recruiters have deviating views on the topic of job interview, unlike in the other phases where at least they have two or three points that match. It's a part of our job to interview career experts on a regular basis... so yes, we know. Plus the fact that we often receive mails from job seekers asking our opinion on which tip is more likely to harvest them gold, this and that.

Stay tuned for part 2.
