The results of Robert Half's Q1 2010 Workplace Survey are out: Many finance professionals in SG remain cautious on the economic outlook in 2010.

Robert Half's survey covered four key financial markets in Asia Pacific; namely Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. Conducted between January and March this year, the survey found 50% of its respondents in Singapore still cautious despite recent improvements in the global economy. Mr. Tim Hird, Managing director of Robert Half Singapore commented in their press release, "The general market sentiment is that the global recovery is still largely uncertain at this point. Having recently emerged from one of the world’s worst recessions, it is unsurprising that companies and professionals worldwide remain cautious about the overall economic outlook."

This pushed financial companies to further revamping their staffing strategies, giving accounting professionals something to look forward to in their careers this year, the survey suggested. 31% of respondents in Singapore revealed that they expect their companies to increase their number of finance staff over the next 12 months. "With business and hiring momentum picking up, finance and accounting professionals are now presented with more career possibilities than during the downturn. As companies look to boost their staff strength, they should also bear in mind the competitiveness of remuneration packages in order to remain attractive to qualified professionals, who are in high demand and increasingly mobile", Hard concluded.

Of Career Goals and Success

Today, let's take a break from all the seriousness of job hunting and have a little chit-chat about goals.

Are you dissatisfied with your career? Here's the thing: lack of goals is one of the leading reasons for stress in the workplace. Knowing what you want is the very foundation of a successful career.

JobsDB.com Singapore wants you to develop career goals or if you are already holding onto something of that sort, we want you to polish it to make it a full-time goal. Having a goal will enable you to track your progress and thus, make you organized. An end goal will keep you from making unnecessary actions and focus your attention to the more important aspects of your career.

"What additional education will I need in order to advance my career?", "How can I balance family and work?" and, "should I strive for a promotion?" are just some of the things that having a goal will make you realize. And though trying to answer these can give you a tremendous headache, that's not entirely a bad thing, right? You DO need to face these questions in order to advance your career, so might as well deal with them the soonest possible.

The "Physics" of Body Language

Another commentary from JobsDB.com Singapore.

We remember posting an article about body language in relation to job hunting in this blog of ours two weeks ago. We mentioned there that job seekers should watch their body language because sloppy actions could communicate negative things about them -- it could communicate unreliability and inability to handle pressure. These two impressions are what job seekers should erase from their facades to begin with and so, the shy types should do their best to counter their fear of speaking and watch carefully the tense parts of their bodies to do great. Yes, that's the perfect way to summarize what we remember including in said post.

TBH, we're not satisfied with how the article turned out. It missed a lot of things -- we weren't able to include the specific things about body language that job seekers should watch out for in order to do great. This is to fill in that big gaping loophole.

It's all about showing confidence. Your goal as a job seeker is to show that you are the best and that you can be trusted; confidence happens to be that one impression that could give you the most favor when it comes to that. But don't worry, it's very easy to wear the "confident impression". Standing straight and making eye contact will do the trick.

While you are being interviewed, try to stay relaxed as much as possible. But don't be too stiff. Try to use your hands when talking but, don't overdo it. The worst posture when being interviews is to fold your arms across your chest. That will make you look un-open.

The Conclusion:

By standing tall before the interview, making eye contacts while being interviewed and giving a firm handshake after the talk, you'll be able to make a good impression.

And also,

The Difference Between a "Job" and a "Career"

Another short commentary from JobsDB.com Singapore

While people use them as synonyms most of the time, the words "job" and "career" are very much different from each other. And understanding the difference between the two can be crucial to achieving success and satisfaction in life.

How are they different from each other, you ask? Think of it this way: a job is equals to financial security while a career is equals to personal fulfillment. It's a personal thing, really. You can have a career but find it difficult to catch up with the bills or have a job but be the grumpiest person to ever exist in the lives of your acquaintances. That's the easiest way to explain the point. It's a tag duel between personal passions and material needs. Now, tell us, which side is winning in your life?

But don't get us wrong, financial stability is important. Heck, career fulfillment is impossible to achieve with a hungry stomach. But money is not so important that you should pass on every chance you get to fulfill your dreams. After all, there are ways in which you can make money out of your personal passions and though these ways aren't as generous as a high-paying job, they are enough to keep your life light shining.

So, which side should rule your life? It depends. Settling for a "job" might be the turning point to your "career" dreams. You don't have to rush to get to your dreams. If things aren't going the way you want them to, get a job. Once the storm settles, resume. You should know when it is time to put your dreams on hold.

What DBS Looks for in a Candidate and More...

A diamond sponsor for the upcoming JobsDB.com Career Expo 2010, DBS is an active corporate client of JobsDB.com Singapore. Since its membership with us, the bank has already posted hundreds of jobs and these jobs have been consistent at the top of our database in terms of popularity.

That's the reason why we are very fond of featuring DBS professionals for Industry Focus: we know that our DBS articles will be of interest to a lot of people. Let's have a track back here: So far, we've interviewed, Mr. Koh Kar Siong (Managing Director of POSB Consumer Banking Group), Ms. Pearlyn Phau (the current managing director of DBS treasures), and Mr. Philip Lim (Managing Director & Head at DBS Franchise & DBS Strategy - Consumer Banking). Today's post is another DBS post. But we're featuring not just one but two professionals from this large bank!

Russel Mok is the Vice-President of Technology & Operations – Customer Centre at DBS. He shared to us a lot of things ranging from what it's like working for DBS to the qualities they look for in a candidate. Mohamed Yusuf Ali Jina, on the other hand, is the Assistant Vice-President, Technology & Operations – Credit Operations . He also shared to us his life as a DBS professional and some tips for applicants looking to work at DBS.

Here are some snippets of our interview with them:

Our Question: What have been the highlights in your career in DBS?

Russel Mok's Answer: I am very fortunate to have been able to rotate between front-end and back-end roles in my career at Customer Centre. And this has given me the breadth of knowledge and experience to have a complete end-to-end understanding of customer service operations. It has also helped me understand our customers’ and their needs better.

Another highlight would be the opportunity I got to pursue my MBA part-time while working, which is something that’s not available in many companies. With the opportunity and support given to me by DBS, I completed my MBA in 3 years.

Our Question: What qualities do you look for in a candidate keen to join DBS?

Mohamed Yusuf Ali Jina's answer: Someone who has and believes in the DBS values of P.R.I.D.E.

* Passionate and committed
* Values Relationships
* Integrity and respect
* Dedicated to teamwork
* Confidence to Excel through commitment and service

How to Stay Productive Regardless of Your Age

They say that productivity is the child of youth. Yes, that's true, but still, JobsDB.com Singapore believes that employment after 50 is plausible.

Are you already in your late 50s? Senility shouldn't stop you from being productive. There are ways in which you can keep on advancing your career regardless of your age. Plus, there are tons of job opportunities out there that prefer experienced candidates like you. JobsDB.com SG recently interviewed Ong Teong Wan, Consulting Partner for Corporate Training at SIM and Honorary Advisor to STADA on Professional Development to inspire you. Still a part of the Singapore workforce at age 72, Mr. Ong shared to us inspiring words. A believer of the concept of "effective aging", he told us his take on how seniors workers could enhance their careers and lives further. Here's a snippet of our interview with him for your reading pleasure:

What advice do you have, in terms of ‘active aging’, for both older jobseekers/workers, and hiring companies?
"We can do less work instead of no work, balance it with relaxation, leisure pursuits, helping others in dire need of assistance or contribute to the community to make it better. Re-orientating values means balancing self-interest with other’s needs to lead a balanced life. Having meaningful work to do, paid or unpaid, in later years helps to maintain one’s self-esteem which is vital for mental health as well as physical health. This is effective aging.

Some may question, “Who wants to employ you at this age?” The internet provides limitless opportunities for creative alternative avenues of low risk work from home or in premises outside. It is not just a source of interesting facts, happenings and trivia."

Mr. Ong also shared to us his views on the current employment market and tips for managers about staff retention. This is also a must-read for managers.

We will be uploading the complete interview @ www.jobsdb.com.sg/Singapore soon, so please stay tuned. Need more career advice? You might want to check out our past Ask an Expert articles. Portfolios

These past few days, we've been so busy writing about job interviews. The hype over the topic is still here, but we figured it's about time we switch our focus on the "paper-work" department of job search. But well, this isn't entirely a 360 degree turn. What JobsDB.com Singapore will be discussing today is designed to help job seekers market themselves during interviews. Especially to those people we've been encouraging to get out of the box since monday, the shy types, a professional portfolio can bring wonders.

What is a portfolio? The idea is this: a portfolio is who you are career-wise. Carrying a portfolio around will increase your chances for employment -- it's an additional tool that you can use to showcase your personal brand. You could say that it's the extended version of your resume, containing not only your qualifications but also your aspirations and personal passions. Yes, that sounds rather complex, but making a portfolio is actually quite easy. You just need to remember three things:

  • The sections
  • The documents to be included
  • The folder/binder

We hope you're already getting the idea. But allow us to give you some more reminders.

You don't want your portfolio to look like a trash folder of your past achievements. Having to organize is inevitable. The easiest way to arrange your portfolio is to divide it into sections. For instance, right after your cover letter and resume, place a section for your certifications. And then after that, make another for your transcripts.

Portfolios are expected to reach the 20-page mark. You will want to use binders since they are capable of holding many pages in a tidy way.

And oh, keep you portfolio up to date. Don't stop asking for recommendations to put in it.You're doing this for your career success after all.

On a side note:

Our database has just received new Construction Engineer Jobs, Civil Engineering Jobs, Singer Jobs, Jobs in IT, Supply Chain Jobs, Jobs in Pharmacy, Regional Manager Jobs and, Tourism Jobs. You might want to check them out.

Of Body Language and Sloppy Speaking

JobsDB.com Singapore's views on job interviews should be as clear as glass to all of you, at this point. We've already posted tons of articles on how you as a job seeker can ace yours with ease. Last month, we talked about first impression in relation to the success of your job hunting. Last january was when we shared our complete interview tips for job seekers.

And we're not finished yet, mind you. There's just so many things to write about job interviews. We find sub topics to share to our followers every day. Yesterday's post was about job interviews, right? We'll ride the same boat today and give you more tips to perfect your next interview appointments. Only, it will focus on body language and why sloppy speaking is a sure-fire way to trash your chances (no sarcasm intended) this time.

Self confidence is our favorite concept for this month. And why is that? It's because it's the simplest way to describe what we want job seekers to do during their interviews. Self confidence is equals to poise and clear speaking. In other words, it's the key to proper body language and speaking. Let JobsDB SG tell you, the way in which you speak will show important information about you. Sloppy speaking will not bring you and your job search any good. Even if you're the nervous type, try to speak clearly and avoid filling words.

Why should you counter your nervousness? Because it will push you to create disturbing actions while you're being interviewed. Your body language will reach an opinion about you. Showing signs that you're nervous will definitely trash your chances up so watch carefully the tense parts of your body e.g. your hands and feet. You don't want to be judged as someone who cannot handle pressure, right?

LearningDB.com, our training arm, has an article that gives an in depth discussion on body language. Though this is about making presentations, reading is still to your advantage. You can read it here.

Newsflash!!
New jobs in Account Services, Chief Engineer, Environmental Science, Defense, Military, and Direct Marketing have just been added to our database.

All About Punctuality

JobsDB.com Singapore believes that self confidence is the key to ace job interviews. We remember posting something that goes with that idea last week. Job interviews are all about selling yourself in full composure; self confidence is the only thing that could help you accomplish that goal. You will not be able to connect with the interviewer properly if you don't believe in yourself to begin with.

Are you a part of the shy crowd? If you're not confident about your people skills, there's a way in which you can portray yourself properly in your job interviews without having to patronize our talking-like-a-dictator advice. We're OK with sticking with your normal self while you're being interviewed, but don't get the idea that we're pushing you to limit your appointments by e-mail. There's no way to pass up the task of talking in job search, remember that. So, what do we want you to do? Be on time for the appointment. The key is punctuality, our dear follower. You don't need words to tell your potential employers that you're hardworking and can be trusted.

Employers expect their applicants to be on time for their respective interview appointments -- that goes without saying. They will interpret your being late for your appointment as a sign of unreliability. You don't want to be judged as someone who will never be able to meet deadlines, right? Because that means another failed job search attempt for you. Who would want to hire an unreliable person to begin with?

Having said all those, you should do your best to get in time for your job interviews. Prepare your clothes a day before. If you're not familiar with the area in which the company is located, leave early so that you will have enough time to look. You might want to try to spot the building a day before the interview to avoid the hassle altogether.

But, oh, don't arrive too early! They say that too much of everything is as bad as too little. Time it just right.

How to Cope with Job Loss and Some Other Things..

Yes, many people are grateful for our career advice articles, but we've been taking our battle against unemployment a bit off the right direction all along to be honest with you. We've been focusing too much on the technicalities of job search. All this time, we've been so busy giving tips to job seekers that we've forgotten to take into consideration what they feel about their loss. Job search is not just about making yourself the best -- it's also an emotional roller coaster with many unappealing criss and cross. It's an issue of self esteem; job seekers need emotional support too, considering how stressful losing a source of income and identity is. Here's to fill in that gap.

Enough with the musing, here's JobsDB.com Singapore's take on coping with job loss. Actually, we have only two things to say and both of them boil down to the idea of taking the crisis as an opportunity.

Losing a job is like losing a relative; what follows is a feeling of grief. Emotions of anger and fear will come to you after and so it's important that you surround yourself with people for support. Take this as an opportunity to bond with your relatives, for instance.

"Your profession defines who you are" -- that's what they say. Losing a job is like losing identification; it can be very frustrating. The most effective way to be able to work through this is to take your mind off of this notion. Don't mind what others think, look for ways to improve your self esteem. Again, think of the crisis as an opportunity. This period can be a great opportunity to evaluate your skills and generate new career options.

But if the depression gets too severe, don't hesitate to seek assistance from a counselor. Or us. Feel free to drop us a message should that happen. We're more than willing to help. You can reach us at jobsdblogsg@gmail.com.

On a side note:
For most people, 2009 was a bad year. The recent global crisis was so bad, people are still having difficulties finding a job this new year. Despite the improvements in Q4 last year, many of the job seekers we've talked to recently think that there's still scarcity in jobs and that they're losing hope ever finding one.

Indeed, many lost their jobs last year. JobsDB.com Singapore is trying its best to help them land a job asap. We've been diligently posting career articles for job seekers in this blog of ours since late last year, hoping that what we know can improve their job hunting. From resume writing tips to strategies to ace job interviews, we hope that we've somehow made your otherwise "hopeless" job search better. This post was made for the same purpose.

Your Handwriting Tells on You

To you, it's just handwriting, but to a handwriting analyst, it paints a picture of the person "behind the pen." — Gary Thomas

Your handwriting can affect your career. There's a study called graphology and believe it or not, some companies make use of it to evaluate applicants. FYI, graphology is handwriting analysis -- experts analyze the personality and temperament of the author based on how he writes. Are you currently looking for a job? If you're not confident about your handwriting, JobsDB SG suggests that you "re-visit"your strokes asap. Although making use of this study as a criterion for hiring sounds a bit off, the truth of the matter is, graphology is one of the best ways to examine whether the applicant is capable of handling the company policies and environment or not. Companies know that. They say that a picture paints a thousand words. This is why some companies use graphology to evaluate applicants.

Make your hands ready to "describe" you by attending this seminar from Career Events.

"Your Handwriting Tells on You" will be facilitated by William Pang, a handwriting expert who has worked with companies since 1978. "Participants will learn the basic skills of handwriting analysis and secrets of how to discover the temperament type of their boss, colleague, new girlfriend or a complete stranger." The seminar will follow this course:

Handwriting Analysis
- Discover your own personality by analyzing your own handwriting
- Find out the strengths and weaknesses of different temperaments types

Handwriting analysis of Participants
- Lucky participants would be selected to have their handwriting analyzed

Handwriting of celebrities

Let your handwriting guide your career choice

Reaching Out to Your Boss

We have to admit that we've been favoring job seekers these past few days -- our posts were mostly about job search. Well, the global crisis was really something; the economy is still tipsy after its assault. We can't just stand here doing nothing for those who lost their jobs. JobsDB.com Singapore's business is to assist people with their job search after all.

Do you miss our career development posts? We haven't forgotten you. Here's something new for your library of favorites.

We remember writing about bosses last month. We found the time to read said post again and realized that it missed a lot of points. The article plainly encouraged employees to decode their bosses' moods for the betterment of their careers. It didn't give tips. This is to fill in that gap. We'll keep this simple.

It all boils down to healthy communication. Your boss isn't talking to you? Many bosses choose not to reach out to their employees. Don't use that to argue with us. Be the one to take the responsibility for the relationship. Work to make it work. Your boss doesn't share with you his calendar? Ask him for details. Send him messages frequently.

Aside from asking him details, also keep your boss updated through your emails. Update him with the latest about you. And don't edit out bad news. While a typical boss dread hearing bad news, telling him early beats can earn you a savior's badge. Of course, you must include possible solutions too.

Is your boss the type to call unexpected meetings? Well, you're a lucky one. You just have to muster enough courage to be able to tell him your plans and ask him his expectations in one go.

Of Self Confidence and Thank You Notes

Self confidence is needed in job search. JobsDB.com Singapore gives an alternative to those job seekers who aren’t sure about their people skills.

Self confidence is the issue with most job seekers. And to think that's important to pass job interviews. There's no chance for you to pass your job interviews if you don't believe in your own abilities. The thing with job interviews is, you need to be able to communicate with the interviewer your goals and skills set with grace and composure while under pressure and in such a short period of time. Self confidence is needed to be able to do that.

Self confidence is not learned. It's something that some people were born with. If you're part of the shy crowd, how can you ace job interviews then? There's no way to pass up the task of talking in job search. After all, that's the very reason why job interviews are a part of the recruitment process -- so that companies could judge you real time. Stereotypes will always be there, but you shouldn't let your insecurities beat your chances up. You have to try to make yourself sound composed while you’re being interviewed --- show an attitude that could at least pass as self confidence. You shouldn't let your interviewer scare you.

Just because you're not good with people, doesn't mean that your confident counterparts have better chances of acing a job than you. Yes, those born with self confidence are better of in some way, but you still have some cards to play. Your ace may come in the form of a sample thank you note.

What is a thank you note? It's exactly what its name says. Sending thank you notes is essential for you because it will show your interviewers your determination. It will tell them how serious you are about the position and that you are grateful they took the time to invite you. It's not difficult to write one. You can find hundreds of samples online. Try it for your next job interview and don’t hesitate to tell us the outcome. We'll be waiting.

Getting Past the Present Job Market's Challenges

"It's tough out there". That's how many of the job seekers we've talked to describe today's job market. Truth be told and much to our chagrin, job hunting has become so tedious. What was once a good-enough-for-challenges-but-not-too-pressing task has become quite a dangerous battle for us. Even though the present employment market is tamer than before, judging by the sudden surge of jobs in our database these past few months, the economy is still on its way to stability and no one can be sure when exactly it will hand over full favors to job seekers. Even though the economy's improving and that can be felt in some sectors of the society, as a job seeker, you shouldn't put down your aggressiveness. If you want a job, then do everything possible, touch as much resources as you can and never let your positivity wane to get it. Competition is tough in the job market-- you're not the only one looking for a job and there will always be someone better than you.

We don't repeat what we've already said before and so don't expect this post to be a summary of all of the job hunting tips we've shared in the past. We desire to help every job seeker we encounter land a job. That having said, time is precious to us. Everyday, we try to come up with new articles which we deem could help job seekers in some way or another. Have you been following our posts diligently but nothing seems to be working? Maybe, the current climate isn't letting you shine. Like what we've always been saying, don't give up. Job hunting these days can tire up even the most optimistic of minds. Here are three more tips for you to try:

Stop sending generic resumes. Make your resume fit every job you wish to apply to. Your resume is the first thing about you that employers see. You should make yours as fitting as possible to the positions they are offering to increase chances of getting noticed.

In interviews, know the answers before the questions are asked. In other words, research about job interviews as much as you can to prepare.

Send cold mails. It doesn't matter if they're not hiring. You have nothing to lose anyway. You're doing this to increase your chances at landing a job.

JobsDB SG's Top Reads for Career Development

Once in a while, we feature good books in this blog of ours. We want all our followers to "touch" as much resources as they can for career success, hence our continuous search for good books to feature here and in our Good Reading section. Just last month, actually, as a part of our "job seeker week", we featured books that we figured could improve our followers' job search. We've done our share for job seekers; today's post is for professionals and workers with problems in their careers.

Having problems with your boss? Already ran out of motivation to continue to work? Whatever your problems are in your working life, these books can help you in one way or another. Here are JobsDB Singapore's top reads for career development:

1) "Building Character: Strengthening the Heart of Good Leadership"

So, you want to be promoted? Well, are you deserving to begin with? Contemplate: are you ready to be a leader? Building Character is a good book for people aiming to get promoted. Being used by many universities in their leadership programs, this book by Dr. Gene Klann presents ideas in a unique way. Instead of stating facts in simple chapter by chapter form, Dr. Gene presents his leadership skills tips with scenarios of leadership character dilemmas. And there's more. This book is a treasure chest, really. Some of the books other highlights include:

  • A clear framework for developing strong leaders that includes examples of inspiring role models like Winston Churchill and Napoleon
  • The importance of challenging work experiences
  • Leadership character training and organizational culture
  • A checklist of good leader behaviour
  • A personal values self-assessment

2) "Executive Stamina: How to Optimize Time, Energy, and Productivity to Achieve Peak Performance"

It may not seem that important, but motivation plays an important role in the corporate world. It's that one thing that keeps the primary elements of "business" moving. Truth be told, many employees resign due to lack of motivation. We're not planning to lecture you if your reason for resigning is this, but before you submit that goodbye letter to your boss, we suggest that you consider the current state of our job market first. Unless you already have a new opportunity waiting outside, it's best to postpone any career moves for now and give your company another shot. But what about motivation? Read this book by Joshua Seldman and Dr. Marty Seldman to find your answer.

Executive Stamina combines the wisdom and methodology of the best executive coaching with the cutting-edge training techniques of world-class athletes to help busy, stressed-out executives achieve peak performance. You'll build stamina and optimize your job performance through:

  • Progressive workout plans
  • Taking control of your calendar
  • Stamina-building nutrition programs
  • Dealing with distracting people who waste your time
  • A personalized stress-management plan
  • Recognizing change and understanding its implications
  • Identifying high-payoff activities

3) "E-Mail Etiquette"

In today's corporate world, e-mail is a principal means of communication. But while e-mailing is convenient, it's harder to "talk" using this means. Proper grammar, formality, and logicality are just some of the many things that you need to mind when writing corporate e-mails. If you're not confident about your e-mail writing skills, this book by Shirley Taylor can help.

Seasoned author and trainer Shirley Taylor shows you how to create electronic rapport and achieve the right results from your e-mails. You will learn how to enhance your reputation as a caring communicator, and present yourself and your organisation in a positive light. In her usual clear, straightforward style, Shirley gives practical guidance on how you can make e-mail work for you, including:

  • Maximising the potential of e-mail
  • Looking good online
  • Writing clear, effective messages
  • Structuring messages logically
  • Developing rapport through e-mail
  • Managing your mailbox
  • Practising safe e-mail
  • Nurturing your netiquette

4) "Detox Your Desk: Declutter Your Life and Mind"

Clutter, Clutter, Clutter. If you have clutter in your desk, spare some time and clean the mess asap! Why, it could cause you to lose interest in your work. A clean desk is all it takes to be able to get the job done.

Written by Theo Theobald & Cary Cooper, Detox Your Desk helps you fight back by purging your system of office toxins, so you can take control of the everyday stuff and calmly field whatever lands in your in-tray.

More good reads to come... stay tuned.
