Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 9.

Know why we're happy? We found many bits of industry news to share. And we're confident that these bits could get you to step up. You should be excited!

First of, according to the the latest survey report from Hudson Singapore, we should expect hiring expectations to remain strong towards the second quarter of 2011. In the survey, 61% of respondents said they'd be hiring until the next quarter. It is still an employee market; staff retention and skills shortage are seen to remain the most challenging HR issues over the next six months. Job seekers are supposed to be in the groove; don't get too worked out on your job search.

We've always acknowledged Singapore's two Integrated Resorts, Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa as powerful boosters for the tourism industry. Two ministers have recently acknowledged the benefits the Singapore economy has derived especially from their casinos. The IRs are going strong....your job search for hospitality jobs, casino jobs, tourism jobs, and travel jobs shouldn't be bumpy. So, don't worry too much.

More proof that Singapore employers are hiring? From permanent jobs to temp jobs to contract jobs, our job listings at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/NewAdvanceSearch is one. The Straits Times also reported that hiring companies booked 29% more space for job ads in the news paper compared to three months prior.

Over at News Watch, job seekers are advised that the most in demand jobs are accountancy jobs, finance jobs, IT jobs, HR jobs, admin jobs, pharmaceutical jobs, and construction jobs. FYI. You can read the complete report at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Latent%20recruitment%20needs?ID=699.

As for other announcements...

If you haven't nominated your Mom for Inspiring Working Mothers Contest yet (or somebody else who you think deserves the title), do so NOW. So far, engage.sg.jobsdb.com/SG/mothers-day/ has already garnered three pages of nominees. Great prizes are to be given away.

Articles on job interviewing, leadership skills, career changing, and more.

We have an uncanny way of choosing which career articles from sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/NewAdvanceSearch should go in a post. It's unfairly biased, but well, we're writers. As writers, it's our goal to be read; what better way to aim for writing supremacy but by always choosing the most relevant (in our understanding of you guys) in the roster?

But don't get us wrong. We're not implying that not all the contents of Career Advice are good reads. We'll make up now, okay? Presenting Career Advice's least featured career articles on this blog...

The comprehensiveness of this article by Kelly Services at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/After the interview?ID=624 is what makes it a good read. We've learned from almost two years of writing about learning and development that rush comes with looking for a job. In this article, the interview tips are presented in a manner that will give convenience to its readers. Looking for a job? You'd get a lot from reading this piece of career resource.

Scott Boyd's Questions To Ask In Interviews at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Questions To Ask In Inter?ID=585 is not featured here often but it speaks about an important aspect of job interviewing. Ask questions and impress the interviewer!

For those looking to switch jobs or have a career change, Kevin Donlin's "Resignation and Acceptance Letters" at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Resignation& Acceptance?ID=647 will help you leave and enter a new ground in good terms. Learn the secrets from grammar to tone.

The cubicle environment doesn't show signs of dying anytime soon. Perhaps, you're working in one? HRNext.com's 15 Tips for Thriving in a Cubicle Environment at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Thriving-Cubicle-Environm?ID=498 lists down ways for HR Managers to defuse potential problems and improve morale.

Leadership skills are essential in order to get a promotion. You may think that the best way to hone your leadership skills is by attending career events and training opportunities. That's a good way but Patricia Fripp's article at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Leadership Lessons?ID=634 says that leadership lessons can also be learned from "everyday" heroes. Read the article to find out what she means.

Are you working smarter or “just” harder? p3

Last night, we were in a quandary -- a big one. We were finalizing our agenda for the next day (which is today); the problem was, we were left to choose from two equally exciting options: either we give part three of our "Are you working smarter of "just" harder series or continue featuring the new uploads of career articles at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerIndex. After some weigh-ins, we decided to do go for option one. This is going to be it's last installment (we think we've already shared everything), so are your pen and notepad ready for keywords 3, 4, 5 and 6?

Saying no is inevitable if you want to start working smarter. Why? A smart worker is a happy worker. Stress is a big time hindrance to achieving this state.

Contrary to what you're probably thinking right now, multi-tasking is not an act of working smarter. It just doesn't work, especially for starters. Multi-tasking will cause you to make a lot of mistakes; you'll accomplish more if you do things one by one until you're practised enough to multi-task.

Moving on, take breaks in between tasks to help your mind refocus. Say no to half-hearted jobs. Your boss is more likely to appreciate quality than quantity.

Also, if you need help, don’t hesitate to look for a counselor. A counselor will help you keep track with your career plan as well as provide you support when you feel discouraged. Needless to say, the things you’ll learn from such a person are worth the money.

Adopt these tips and you’ll be surprised at the efficiency you’ll show. Recommended readings:

Career advice. We're here to support you.

In case you haven't been to sg.jobsdb.com lately, Career Advice has just been updated with new career articles. Read about a wide variety of career topics -- from asking for salary increase and setting goals to resume writing and job interviewing. In particular, the following are the best reads in the roster:

Think you deserve a pay raise? Neen James' "Tips on How to Ask for a Raise" will help you make the correct salary estimate. Reading the article at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Career%20Development?ID=705 can probably increase your confidence level too, bettering your chances of succeeding at the goal.

James also wrote "Tips on How to Set Goals" at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Goal%20Setting?ID=703. There are many books you can read about how to set goals; definitely, it will take time to draw out the best strategy for your situation. In this article, James summarized everything for your convenience.

Chew Kim Whatt's article at www.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Jobseeker%20Advice?ID=660 is for job hunters. If you're out of a job, you should manage your emotions and keep a positive mindset. Kevin Donlin's "The Eternal Question" at www.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Resume%20Length?ID=648 on the other hand, will correct all your resume errors.

Yet another announcement (BUT you SHOULD read this).

Writing about career is never easy. It is for this reason that we take brainstorming sessions seriously (although we don't undergo such brain exercises anymore due to a very busy schedule). To write "effectively" for a specific set of audience is to catch the interest of these people. Which means, it won't be proper to just go for whichever topic comes to mind -- everything around this blog is supposed to be communal.

Okay, we're ranting. We can't help it -- ranting is the best way there is to start a post about announcements. Ranting sets a conversational mood and well, it's what we want. Anyway, we have lots of things to announce, so we'll end the useless rambling now and start with the important stuff. Are you ready?

You probably know this already, but we haven't formally announced our Inspiring Working Mothers contest here. So have you already nominated your mom or someone that you know that is deserving for the title? Participating is easy:

1) Nominate someone.
2) Once your entry is up, it’s time to rally for friends and family to vote for your candidate at before 9 May, 17 00hrs.
3) Nominees at “Hall of Fame” with the most number of votes and comments qualifies for JobsDB.com 100 Inspiring Working Mothers!

3D2N Bangkok trip for 2 worth $500, 2D1N Cameron Highland trip for 2 worth $300, 2D1N Malacca trip for 2 worth $200, and other great prizes are at stake. More info can be read at http://engage.sg.jobsdb.com/SG/mothers-day/how-to-win/. We'll be waiting for your entries!

Are you working smarter or “just” harder? p2

There's a heavy reason why we don't just want to waste away our appointment with you guys today. We won't be here tomorrow and Friday in observance of a Christian holiday. It goes without saying that we HAVE to make today fruitful in terms of learning and development, or else you may lose interest.

So are you guys ready? What do we have in store for today, Anyway? Our plan is, we'll further our "Are you working smarter of "just" harder series?". Will that be enough as a make up?

Keyword number two is...

Fun. A smart worker never gets bored because he knows how to make the most out of his job, no matter how boring the tasks get. Perfect career is a non-existent concept, but you can make your work life exciting by always keeping a lighthearted attitude. Focus on the fun in your job. List down all those tasks that you enjoy doing the most and distribute them throughout the week to keep the motivation flowing. As for those in your "most mundane" list, figure out how you can make them a little more exciting to do. They're still a part of your job description, after all.

Working smarter also means being sociable. It's all about keeping a light attitude, right? Having sound relationships with the people you work with will make the work place more comfortable and thus, alleviate a large part of your everyday stress.

Stay tuned for the other keywords!

Are you working smarter or “just” harder? p1

So, how did you guys find our video? Should we expect your attendance to JobsDB.com Career Expo 2012? Not that we're pressuring you to come, but well, it's for your good. Singapore's only paper less job fair is nothing if not an oasis of job openings. We don't have specific schedules yet but rest assured, you'll hear from us once we receive updates from our editors.

Anyway, CE2012 is still far ahead and we should start talking about other career concerns for the betterment of this blog. Having established that point...we haven't written anything about work-life balance in a long while. This is what inspired us to start this "Are you working smarter or “just” harder?" series of career tips. Are you ready for the first part?

~

Want to be promoted? You'll have to show your boss that you deserve it first. Perhaps, start embracing the working scheme that he likes the most? But this doesn’t necessarily imply more work and stress in your part. There's a big difference between working smarter and working harder in achieving career success. You've heard the phrase before, no doubt.

What does it mean to work smart? First keyword:

Work-life balance. The key here is management, both in terms of time and money. Working smarter denotes two things: recognising the importance of time and knowing reasonability when it comes to spending. Making priorities and saving will get you out of the rut; you'll be able to take care of yourself and your family much better. If you use your time wisely, then you’ll be able to finish everything that needs to be done and you can relax better at home.

For this, we suggest you make a to-do list. There's no better way to achieve organisation than to maintain an active planner. This of course also calls for the need to eliminate office distractions -- you can do this by turning your phone off while at work and opening your email at certain scheduled times.

Stay tuned for the other keywords!

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming with a special announcement.

Pardon our captain obvious realization, but we just have to let this out or else we'll die of guilt. We haven't conversed like this with you guys in a while. Although we still have contact with the ever elusive writing muse, we don't know if we can use the talent properly for this blog anymore. Not that we've completely lost interest to writing about Singapore jobs, career tips, learning opportunities and whatnot. Perhaps, graduate school is still making adjustments on our lives, trying to insert itself to our basic formulation of life and work to make it threefold.

But be assured that we're not going anywhere just yet. We've been moderators to this blog for almost two years now; it won't be easy to part with this responsibility, now that we view it a basic aspect of our lives.

Anyway, we'd like to keep this conversation light, so don't hesitate to keep on reading. Nothing serious to come through, don't worry. How about we offer you next a video for a change?

Have you seen this video about JobsDB.com Career Expo 2011? It's our editors' latest tribute to the successful job fair.

Missed the event? This video will encourage you to sign up for JobsDB.com Career Expo 2012!

Guess we'll see you next year?

Original video can be watched at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp-RWzlRAs8. For more jobs, please visit http://sg.jobsdb.com.

BTW, if you haven't been to our website lately, there is a new report from Hays Singapore concerning job industries. It can be found on News Watch. We'll feature the article's contents on Friday on this blog, but reading it ahead of time will help.

Secrets to Career Growth -part 2 of 2-

It's been a while! Finally, here's part 2! Today we'll talk about

Continuous learning is out of the question in a discussion like this. Don't stop learning new skills to stay relevant. Even though your company invests time and resources into training you with seminars every now and then, we suggest you develop your skills on your own as well. If you come across training programmes and other learning opportunities that you find relevant to your company's goals, don't hesitate to share them to your boss. Also ask for feedback from your coworkers and your boss – this will help you pinpoint your skills that need improvement.

Of course, mistakes can't be avoided. When you make a mistake, accept the responsibility and quickly work to resolve it. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask. Don't take risks as you might just make the problem worse. Your boss will appreciate your willingness to learn. Here's the thing: Bosses have far more respect for employees who take responsibility for their actions than those who don't.

Maybe you'll get more motivated if we say that there’s a big prize in doing this. What's it? That alpha-employee status. Ever heard of the alpha-male syndrome? It's an unwritten contest among males on who is the strongest and has the best skills. This is a concept that exists in offices in some form. The alpha person in the office is the one the boss trusts the most. It goes without saying that achieving the status is the fastest way to a promotion. And a higher salary.

But high salaries aside, the biggest benefit of doing all these is the flexible career trait. Being active in developing your career allows you to factor in resignations and to decide whether big revamps need to be done or not in your career. Having flexibility is very important as it helps increase your odds of staying employed and relevant.

Our conclusion? Here are the secrets to career growth; you should have all these in your plan: optimism, commitment, the drive to continue learning, and the initiative to learn from mistakes.

Secrets to Career Growth -part 1 of 2-

Motivation, Training Programmes, Proper Work Management, Learning from Mistakes.

The secret to your career success lies within you. It all depends on how motivated you are to move your career forward. Whether you are seeking growth in your present career or looking to change jobs, planning can be an important scope to guide you in reaching your goals.

'Work at your best ability' and 'always put your best foot forward' are the best tips we can give to employees planning for career development and seeking career growth. Impossible to do? Doing your best doesn't mean being perfect. We want you to enumerate the major demands of your job. The list will serve as your guide and once you have it, never leave anything in there unfinished. We also don’t want you to let projects go by just because they’re unfamiliar. Accepting 'challenges' is the best way to show your boss that you have initiative.

But wait, before we go further into this, we'd like to ask, how's your relationship with your boss? No career growth strategy will work on you if your boss' antics and business style are unfamiliar to you. If you find yourself questioning his decisions more often than 'appropriate', then you should make amendments asap.

Stay tuned for part 2.

Looking to move your career forward? Contemplate on these questions. -part 2 of 2-

As promised, here's part 2:

Do you find career seminars and skills trainings relevant to your career?
You should. We don't like to sound like a broken record, but this is something worth repeating over and over: learning is essential to career growth. There's no stopping the work world from undergoing changes and you have to be able to cope with these changes in order to stay relevant. We know, such events often come with a hefty price tag, but you'll get your money's worth in the long run. Also if you come across training programmes that go along with your company's pursuits, suggest them to your boss.

How is your relationship with your boss?
He holds your future in your job right? Plus, your boss is not a psychic. Speak if you want to be heard. Frequent communication, although may sound a bit too pushy, is one of the oldest entries in the book when it comes to career development.

What's your style in fighting stress?
Everyone experiences stress in the workplace. How do you go about work stress? Bonding with your family? That's good but we're also encouraging you to enroll to an interest class. We're telling you, interest classes are a great terrain for networking.

Do you have a contacts list?
No? Start networking now. Career success is also about who knows you; an active network is a great tool to generate paths of success. Contacts are a great source of professional support and some of them can give you access to the hidden jobs market too, should a career change come to your mind.

What are your thoughts on social media networking?
Too bothersome? People join (including us) Twitter, Facebook, or Linkedin for nothing! You'll get to meet people of varying expertise from different parts of the world without the hefty expense. Enough said.

As for job updates...
We haven't found much to share, but here's the thing: Singapore remains at the top when it comes to desirability to career professionals, salary expectations, and career opportunities. Anyway, we've read from www.channelnewsasia.com that the chemical industry remains a pillar of economy, having contributed S$80.5 billion to Singapore's total manufacturing output; the comment has come from Minister of State for the Environment, Dr Amy Khor. A job hunter of chemical job or any other science job? You'll find job prospects at http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/jobs/sciences-laboratory-researchdevelopment/1.

We've also read, this time from www.todayonline.com, that the number of tourists to Singapore increased to 990,000 in February according to the Singapore Tourism Board. We're predicting the creation of more hospitality jobs i.e. F&B jobs, hotel jobs, casino jobs, hotel manager jobs, tourism jobs and travel jobs.
