February seminars. For your training and development.

It's amazing how fast time flies. Today's the start of another week, which means we're almost done with January. Last week was number 4, right? Were we able to accomplish all our goals for the month?

Sort of. The ranting is still an issue, for one. Then, there's still our running-out-of-topic problem because we seem to have already lost our creative juices. We're still figuring out a way to get these juices replenished. In the meantime, please exercise patience with us some more. We'll reach a conclusion soon.

Before this turns into a full-out rant, we're making it clear that our agenda for today is to promote the February offerings of both Career Events and LearningDB.com, not to get you guys to comment on our insecurities again. You're supposed to be excited because February means that JobsDB.com Career Expo 2011 is so near.

Yey. But that's entirely another thing. We'll make a full-blown feature for the job fair probably a week before its scheduled opening. For now, let's go back to the seminars. Are we okay with that?

Career Events is going to have a seminar on presentation skills this coming Feb 19. Now, this is one event you shouldn't miss whether you are a career builder or job hunter. It is imperative to have presentation skills in today's work world of competition, right? The sign up sheet is available at www.jobsdb.com.sg/StaticContent/SG/CareerEvents/events/Present-with-confidence.htm. Go there too for more information.

LearningDB.com's seminars are on the expensive side, yes, but that's because it only employs career experts and professional trainers. Your company will benefit a lot from trialing a package. Have you passed www.learningdb.com.sg to your boss? Did he consider?

He should. February is going to be a versatile month for the website. There's going to be a seminar on writing skills and one about stress management too. Those with admin jobs, receptionist jobs, sales jobs, and business development jobs are encouraged to attend a telephone skills seminars on Feb 18.

Hey we're just teasing you with the vagueness. Before you get really impatient, here's the complete list:

09 Feb -- EQ Techniques - To Improve Personal Effectiveness At Work
10-11 Feb -- Effective Business Writing
14-15 Feb -- Technical Writing Skills for Managers and Technical Professionals
16 Feb -- Exceptional Work Skills
17 Feb -- Creativity at Work
18 Feb -- Building Great Business Relationships
18 Feb -- Telephone Skills for Service Professionals
21 Feb -- Amazing Sticky Presentations Quick Start
22 Feb -- Dealing with Difficult People and situations
23 Feb -- Achieving Peak Performance by Improving Your Memory
23 Feb -- Effective Credit Control & Speedy Debt Recovery
24 Feb -- Stress and wellness management

For more information, please contact LearningDB.com at 6861 1000 or email to learning@jobsdb.com.sg. To sign up, just go to www.learningdb.com.sg/default.htm#Feb and find the seminars' respective web pages.

We'll see you guys in one or two of these seminars right?

But we're not yet done. Give us more time to promote the job seeker resources of our parent website, sg.jobsdb.com. We just want you guys to take advantage of them all:

Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 4.

It's Friday again! We suppose.... we don't have to introduce our agenda for today anymore? After all, we've written updates on Singapore jobs since a long time ago. Anyway, are you ready? We mean, do you already have a pen and notepad with you? Aside from the research we've done, we're also featuring a report from Hays Singapore and other announcements from our editors back at sg.jobsdb.com. It's going to be one heck of a press release so you should take thorough notes. Very...thorough notes.

The NUS Career Fair is making a buzz. And naturally, as participants to the event, we feel great. Today's the career fair's last day but it sure has sparked hope and optimism to many job seekers in Singapore because of the many top employers who have signed up to participate. Given this, we're positive that our very own career fair, JobsDB.com Career Expo 2011, will be as crowded with employer participants or more.

If you haven't found out already (for some reason...), the dates and location for the event have been cast. This shiny icon is proof:

Career Events will be providing learning and development aspects in the event too. There's no reason for you to not attend. Everything's pointing towards the "Go" side.

As for jobs...it's a good thing that our editors already updated News Watch with the latest report from Hays. You know, the only jobs-related headlines we've found are about the NUS career fair, so.. yes?

According to the January to March report from Hays, the industries of Accountancy, Banking, Construction, Recruitment, IT, Oil & Gas, Pharmaceutical, and Logistics are demanding more talents. So it's safe to say that there will be enough Singapore Banking Jobs, Accountant Jobs, Construction Jobs, IT Jobs, HR Jobs, Insurance Jobs, Pharmaceutical Jobs, Sales Jobs, Admin Jobs and Supply Chain Jobs for everyone until March. Hopefully, this will go beyond.

For specifics details, you may read the complete report at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/First%20quarter%20hiring?ID=602. Don't forget to share us your insights below at the comments section. You may be excited or doubtful, or whatever. Just share them and we'll reply in the best of our abilities.

Now, the updates...

Many things are still ongoing including What's Your Dream Job?, the romantic photo contest of sg.openrice.com, and the offering of our free Iphone App. FYI.

We would also just like everyone to visit www.learningdb.com.sg/default.htm#Feb to check our LearningDB.com's offerings for February. Interesting career seminars are to be held. You don't want to miss them.

Job hunting? Questions to ask yourself.

A question for job seekers: How do you approach your job search? Do you apply for everything you see in a listing, like you're in a the-most-number-wins contest or something? Or maybe you do the exact opposite? Do you include a cover letter to strengthen the pull of your resume? Or perhaps you calculate all your actions first and do not just send a generic listing of your qualifications?

No. We're not being sarcastic on the last part. These past few days, we've been so busy answering complaints about deceit. Is the Singapore job market really healthy like what we've been establishing in our Friday updates since the start of this year? How come nothing's happening with your job search?

Yes, the job market is doing good. And there's no prejudice in that evaluation. A lot of people dream of building a career in Singapore, inside and outside Asia. Although there are plenty of Singapore openings, competition is tight. Ergo, applying for a job in Singapore is more than just resume writing and praying to every deity that you get to be called for a job interview. If you REALLY want to succeed (and fast), you shall not just write your resume, but rather, personalise it.

You will now just refer to the resume you've been using for job applications since the start as a draft. You will edit this draft following the requirements of each of those positions in your eye list.

Hard work? Yes, but it will pay well motivation wise. No more feeling bad because of neglect. You will at the very least be acknowledged.

Quite obviously, this is a follow up on yesterday's post about our general idea of a "perfect" job search. We are rambling, we admit, and one of your eyebrows are probably raised by now. But here's the thing: There are no two opinions that are alike. It is still up to you if you will follow this job hunt tip or not. But well, there's nothing wrong with trying, right? If you've been job hunting for quote some time now but to little avail, why not change your strategy to this? The change could be for the good.

And we're done. If you haven't noticed yet, we're training ourselves to write shorter for clarity purposes. That's one reason why we're ending this unusually short. And well, we've got these two new icons to promote here. Naturally, they will take space. Heh. We're just kidding. Nevertheless:

First is for gratitude...again. Because we can't thank you enough:

A job search strategy to consider.

Given that motivation and knowledge are both necessary to get noticed in Singapore's healthy but tight jobs market (don't look at us that way....you know we've got career experts as backups), how is it best to approach a job search over here? It's simple: Do everything that will make you stand out. Which means you will have to...

  • Carefully analyse your strengths and weaknesses.
  • REALLY know what you want.

In other words, self assessment is a necessary step in achieving career success. Whichever field you are looking to get yourself in, banking industry or marketing communications or perhaps, the aviation industry, it will be your key.

So, is this going to be another one of our redundant articles about looking for a job, where we quote pretty much the same people at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerIndex every time? Well, yes... almost. But it's for an understandable reason. We haven't written about job hunting in a long time. It's unfair because we've generated many new memberships December last year.

We're too busy minding about random, unimportant stuff that we don't know we've already committed a grave error. And perfectionists are supposed to see such an error coming and prevent it before it gets at its worse!

We're ranting..and we know it. So before you give up on reading, we're making it clear now that today's going to be about personalising job applications again, but this time, the discussion will be in general terms. Meaning, we'll be brief with our explanations and be able to discuss all the aspects of job hunting in relation to the concept, from fishing for Singapore job ads to resume writing to posting resume.

The concept of personalising one's job search is not new; it has been the most recommended suggestion from job hunting experts for quite a long time now, in fact. Because we really mean to make this short, the concept goes along as follows:

  1. Fishing for job ads -- If we have any takers, we'll bet that this is not where your idea of job hunting starts, no more no less.To be able to make proper edits to your resume draft, you have to have a list of job ads, complete with requirements as reference. As career expert, David P. Helfand, has put it in his article at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/29.htm?ID=376, "If relevant career options are not identified, the remaining steps (researching career options, resume writing, job searching, and interviewing) become more and more difficult to complete and, when completed, are more likely to result in job dissatisfaction."
  2. Resume writing -- You probably already know who we are planning to quote here. But first, the basic idea is having specific resumes for each of the job ads in your list. The how question can be answered by reading Sandra Sandu-Reeves pointers at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Career%20Guide?ID=267.
  3. Posting resume -- kind of self explanatory, really, but the point that we want to highlight here is giving every version of your resume a cover letter. Here are good article about cover lettering on Career Advice:

    Writing cover letters that sizzle

The "So, What?" Cover Letter Test

Cover Letters - Do People Really Read Them?

Your cover letter is the first hurdle towards that new job, so get it right!

Okay. We're done for today. Don't forget to visit us on Friday for our latest update on Singapore jobs. But if you have time to spare tomorrow too, your support will be very much appreciated.

Oh btw, what kind of industry news do you want to hear from us on Friday? We're kind of curious as to what our followers look forward to the most whenever we make the editions. Drop your answers below at the comments section.

Airlines Jobs. Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. Industry Focus is back!

If you ever listen to anything we say, listen to this: you want to visit our blog every Friday. Singapore jobs, online contests, and industry news are what we do best, apparently.

But we've hated the slacking off behaviour since college. Although we view feedback as an important part of the writing process (as we've mentioned previously), that doesn't mean we're not posting quality career articles every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday any longer because we've given up on getting you interested on these days. We're dragging the challenge for another year. We'll still do, even though it's kind of given that not a lot of people will read them. It's that thing they call...what is it again? Devotion?

Is it apparent now what we've planned to do today? We've chosen to do this today because many of you may have already labeled it "lost" and we want to benefit from the intrigue factor. To those who are still getting themselves familiarised with our ways over here, this blog has already undergone lots of revamps and changes (because well, we're flaky writers at best, but it's for the good...so). The thing is, we haven't done this in a while.

So, do we need something from you? Perhaps, patience? Just give us your undivided attention and we'll be good.

If you've dropped by sometime last week, you probably know what we're talking about. It's been so long since our parent website, sg.jobsdb.com, has featured an article for Industry Focus, and we're really excited. There. Is it still not obvious?

Yes. We're referring to this new upload about Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Enabling%20Opportunities?ID=595. We kind of remember promising sometime last week that we'll give it a proper feature on this blog within this week. Now's the best time for it, we believe.

Anyway, the aviation industry in Singapore is a healthy one. There has to be a reason why it's seen as a great place to work in by many people, including us. It's probably because it doesn't just accept anyone -- special skills are required in order to function well in the job positions under this field. If you're interested in building a career out of an aerospace job or airlines job someday, you should definitely read this article. If not (probably, you're happy with your Singapore accounting job or IT job already), who are we to force into a career change? But please enjoy this feature too. We haven't done this in a while, right?

We've got bits of wisdom from the following CAAS key people:

  • Mr Clarence Tan, Manager (Planning & Development)
  • Mr Lim Khoo Sun, Principal Technical Officer
  • Ms Chee Yen Ting, Manager (Aerospace).
  • Mr Daniel Ng, Deputy Division Head, AI Division
  • Ms Tan Hwee Yee, Manager (Air Cargo and Logistics)

If you've always wanted to learn from them (or maybe you're really just interested in how CAAS works), the article is more than just a reference.

And in case you want to read more about airline services jobs in Singapore, we recommend this article about Singapore Airlines at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/singapore-airlines.htm?ID=109.

So, there. Short but meaningful.

Learning and success. Career Events and LearningDB.com updates.

So... how would you grade our Singapore jobs update last Friday? Did it introduce you to new prospects? Or perhaps, what it did was motivate you into doing more for your job search? We're crossing our fingers that you'll answer "yes" whichever instance applies to you. It's very not like us to follow up like this, like we've got no other choice but to resign if you answer negatively...we know. But really, to these writers, feedback is an important part of the writing process. Ergo, the process can't go on unless you give us your shot.

So, will you give us this favor and share your insights at the comments section below?

Anyway, today's a Monday and we're not supposed to be talking about our insecurities as writers and jobs in Singapore for that matter. Before anyone gets irritated and give up reading right now (yes there will be a good part in this post, so be patient), today marks the beginning of January's last week and a lot will be happening. Let's start, shall we?

And no, this isn't just a copy of what we've written Monday last week. We only repeat if it's necessary, right? Anyway, this will serve as a reminder if you've signed your attendance to one (or more) seminars way before. Have you forgotten?

For those career professionals who are still deciding whether to invest their money on LearningDB.com and Career Events or not, consider this as another one of our sales talks. We won't stop until you swear your loyalty! Heh. Just kidding.

Unleash Your Image Power Through Dressing & Etiquette with Audrey Quek was a success and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who had made it so. Missed it? Don't worry, the next one from Career Events is also about personal branding, albeit more focused on the presenting aspect. Just look at the left side. If you're interested, we suggest you sign up as early as now because FlowerAdvisor is giving away free vouchers to first 10 sign ups. Visit www.jobsdb.com.sg/StaticContent/SG/CareerEvents/default.htm for more information and the sign up sheet.

How about LearningDB.com? If your boss is planning to expose you and your colleagues to more training opportunities this year, we suggest you pass him the link to www.learningdb.com.sg asap before he finalizes anything. The seminars are a bit on the expensive side, but this is because we're concerned with quality. We bet your boss wouldn't mid. The website's track record is an impressive one, having already helped more than 30 Singapore top companies with their learning and development needs. Help us put your company in this list at www.learningdb.com.sg/client_list.htm.

Anyway, LearningDB.com has many seminars for business professionals this week, starting off with Sowmya Varadharajan's "Introduction to Transfer Pricing" to be held tomorrow. Sign ups are still accepted!

Next in line is Lim Lian Soon's Internal Controls & Fraud, which is scheduled to be held on Jan 26. Aside from those looking to learn the basics of the entrepreneur mindset, we also encourage HR professionals -- those with HR manager jobs and HR executive jobs -- to attend. Those with other admin jobs are encouraged to attend as well.

HR professionals who specialise in compensation and benefits should attend Sivakumar Saravan's Withholding Tax on Jan 28. Amar N. Hari's Business Goals Workshop is next. Since this is also going to discuss the basics of goals setting, we suggest everyone out there who is aiming for career success to come and join the discussion. It will be worth it!

For more information, please contact LearningDB.com at 6861 1000 or email to learning@jobsdb.com.sg. Sign ups can be made at www.learningdb.com.sg/default.htm#Jan. Locate these seminars' respective web pages over there. And because we like doing things in advance, give us more time to promote the February schedules at www.learningdb.com.sg/default.htm#Feb.

And that's it. We don't want to hold you guys any longer because it's Monday and well, we've already said enough useless stuff. But don't forget to share your insights below. You'll make us really happy if you do. Or if you don't want to, you can instead show your support by being our follower.

Happy learning!

Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 3.

No. We don't regret saying all those good things about cliches yesterday. We've already gone against the status quo... there's no point in hiding our real selves anymore. Thing is, we're not as conventional as you probably think we are. To reiterate this weirdness even, allow us to use another cliche to start today's post: "The best things in life are free."

Another no. We didn't just get that out of nowhere. There's a heavy reason why of all cliches, we've chosen that one to feature here. Why? You'll found out later (or if you've dropped by here sometime between Tuesday and yesterday, you probably know the reason already). Anyway, let's go to the Singapore jobs, shall we?

Yes. We've found many useful bits for this week's update on Singapore openings. So...you know, where we're getting at, right? Have your paper and notepad ready because you'll find lots to take note of once we start. And we're starting in 3, 2, 1...

This year is turning out to be a job seeker's market, according to analysts. We've read from our favourite news sources that many employers in the industries of banking and IT are currently looking for new talent and seeing that they will be doing so for the rest of the year. This is derived from the results of a survey from Hudson Singapore of 450 executives. Worth noting because this is considered as the highest level of hiring expectation in 11 years. So, prospects wise, it can be said that job hunters of Singapore banking jobs, finance jobs, IT jobs, web developer jobs, team lead jobs, programmer jobs, among others, are pretty much covered and have nothing to worry about.

It's also useful to note here another finding of the survey. Perhaps to motivate you to do more for your job search? Many employers are ready to give benefits this year as an answer to the staff retention issue. Key terms like work life balance, salary increase, are training opportunities are being talked about, fyi.

What about the other industries? Accounting jobs, insurance jobs, media jobs, and engineer jobs in Singapore are out of the question, but here's something to motivate those with jobs that require technical skills: Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has reiterated that there will always be demand for supply chain jobs, cook jobs, technician jobs and skill worker jobs.

We don't know if we've really satisfied you with these findings, but this sure is fuller compared to the past two editions. Anyway, we hope that you'll continue dropping by our blog every Friday. You can be sure that we're always looking for ways to improve our research skills and writing skills.

So where's the relation to the free cliche? Uhm, well actually we just want to promote again that the JobsDB.com IPhone App that's free is already available. Now, you can access the best jobs in Singapore anywhere...More info at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/en/StaticContentFullContainer/iphone/jobsdb-iphone-app.html. This ad deserves to be posted again:

And then, What's your dream job? is still ongoing. Even if you've already submitted your entry, continue interacting by commenting on other people's dreams at engage.sg.jobsdb.com/dream-job/. Needless to say, it's an excellent way to make friends.

BTW, have you read the latest from Industry Focus? We're referring to the feature about The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. Not yet? Do so now at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Enabling%20Opportunities?ID=595. More reason for you to digest every word over there if you're a job hunter of aviation jobs and airlines jobs.

The power of positive thinking.

When you think about it, both career building and job hunting are subjective concepts. How two job seekers will answer the question of "How are you doing?" will depend on their perception of challenge, for instance. If one is naturally optimistic, he'll probably opt to go with the answer of "I'm thinking of revising my gameplan because I haven't got an interview since last week." Depending on the other job hunter's perception of failure, he may or may not answer with "I''m going nowhere and I badly need help."

This is why more and more training providers, including Career Events, are offering sessions on positive thinking. Specifically, what it has to do with career success.

Writers are always looking for ways to portray themselves cool. We're no exception to that stereotype, of course. However, we're announcing to everyone that's around today that we believe in cliches. How's that for breaking the status quo? "A positive attitude brings strength, energy and initiative" and "Clear thoughts produce clear results" are just some of those that prove our penchant for passed on tidbits of wisdom.

Okay so, we haven't fixed our schedules yet, contrary to our earlier declaration. Many things are going on and well, let's just leave it there or do you want to hear our frustrations out? But we DID plan for today. We just hope that you'll put your inputs too, you know...by using the comments section below (or probably by officially becoming our follower), so we can make this a fruitful one. It's why we've chosen to talk about positive thinking (and introducing it with cliches) in the first place. It's not too heavy but still interesting.

Anyway, going back to Career Events and its past offerings about thinking positive, were you an attendee? No? You weren't aware of Career Events at that time yet? We haven't been informed of what's to be held after March this year, but we have a feeling there will be one about our topic for today. So... keep your fingers crossed while we rally for perhaps another session of "Power of Positive Paradigm" or "Achieve a Successful Career and Live Your Dreams" this year!

This isn't scientifically proven, but we can assure you the effectiveness of thinking like this because we've experienced its effects first hand. Plus, we're not alone on believing that psychology has something to do with career. Career Advice has articles about career success that has points on thinking positive.

An article by Kelly Services at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/The%20Future:%20The%20Changing?ID=575 has this advice for job hunters: "The best advice when looking for work is to be active, energetic and tenacious. Don't be put off by initial rejections." They should be thought of as guidelines for a better next time.

The concept of work life balance revolves around the idea of staying happy despite a tough workload. Those who believe that a balanced work and life is the key to success are better workers than those who don't, therefore. Theirs is a superb source for motivation. New to the concept? Want to learn more about it? We recommend the following for reading:

A Great Home and a Caring Community

Work And Play Makes A Great Day

Work-Life Balance 101 Part 1 (comes in multiple parts)

Local Trends In Work Life Balance

And because this is a topic for debate...what do you think? Do you believe that positive thinking can lead one to success as well? Or perhaps you think it can do the job but needs the help of certain other factors? Come on, jump in.

But wait...we're not done yet.

We know many of you are looking forward to tomorrow. We'll be making another update about Singapore jobs, so you better not forget to drop by. In the meantime, please indulge on these:

Accounting Jobs
Banking Jobs
IT Jobs
Insurance Jobs
Government Jobs
Sales Jobs

These categories have just received additions last night. FYI.

And because it's extremely satisfying to do so....

Wondering why we haven't featured sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Enabling%20Opportunities?ID=595 here yet? We'll do soon. Wait for it. =)

Building people skills. Why it matters.

We can lie to ourselves and say that we don't mind losing readers. But even if we are a little bit full of ourselves (that we admit to), it's a common fact among media professionals that to lose supporters -- no matter how small -- is a major sign of weakness. In this industry we're in, support is as critical as loan applications are to the banking industry.

That's why we're always inquiring... always asking you to evaluate our skills in certain aspects. We may not be fans of the perfectionist behaviour, but really, it's a very effective way of fixing flaws. This is so we can eliminate those things that you hate the most about us ASAP.

So... did you miss us? Did we surprise you with our uncharacteristic silence yesterday? Actually, we took yesterday off with permission from our editors back at sg.jobsdb.com. We just forgot to tell you guys about it. So unlike us? We guess we need to edit our schedules a little bit. Starting today.

And the rants end there. We understand that most of you are probably still in the where-the-hell-are-you? mood. So before anyone decides to smack us right in the face because of exasperation, we're making it clear that what's scheduled for today is a very, very interesting topic, one that we often receive career questions about. So don't be mad anymore, please?

Our objective for today is to discuss people skills and why it's imperative for a career builder (a job hunter, even) who wants to achieve career success to have them.

If you've been following us for quite some time now, you should know how much Career Advice can help in this aspect of career building. Communication plays an important role in career; if you want to get past the roadblocks without hurting yourself too much, people skills are where you should focus your objectives of learning.

Although those that it addresses are senior managers and team leads, we also want you to read Brian Tracy's 'Effective Communication' at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Effective-Communication?ID=485. The way you interact with your boss and colleagues can affect your work performance: It has been said that those who communicate well with their managers and coworkers perform better at work than those who don't. Needless to say, performing well is the key to a salary increase or job promotion.

For mature workers, according to Susan Dunn at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Is%20There%20Employment%20After?ID=571, the key to employment after 50 is proper marketing of one's people skills. Use the fact that you've worked with different kinds of people for many years already as your major selling point.

This feature won't be complete without us promoting Kamal Kant's 'Building People Skills' at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/BUILDING-PEOPLE-SKILLS?ID=501 again, of course (are you expecting us to feature this?). If you want to really understand how important relationships are in the realm of career, this is a must-read.

How do you communicate effectively? Techniques are thought by career coaches and experts who specilise in career seminars and training opportunities. If you're eager to learn, there's always LearningDB.com to bring you prospects to consider. After all, 'communication skills' is a category at www.learningdb.com.sg for a reason. You can check schedules at www.learningdb.com.sg/calendar.htm#communication_skills.

BTW, since we're already talking about people skills, we should probably bring back to your attention too that Career Events has set February to hold a presentation skills seminar. Details can be found at www.jobsdb.com.sg/StaticContent/SG/CareerEvents/events/Present-with-confidence.htm. If you enlist now, you can give yourself a chance to win a FlowerADvisor coupon.

We suggest the following for further reading:

But wait, hold on... we still have an announcement to make (and it just can't wait until Friday!). Get access to the greatest job pool in Asia wherever you are... for free! JobsDB.com IPhone App is already available! See what we mean with the 'can't wait until Friday' rant?

We'll try our best to make up on Friday with the Singapore Jobs. We're crossing our fingers that we find good bits to feature.

If you persevere, you shall prosper. In learning.

We've been featuring LearningDB.com and Career Events on this blog since a long time ago. What's the big deal? Learning and development may not be as complicated a topic as perhaps, stress management or career change (it's fairly easy to contemplate on, really), but the issue here is how you can get people motivated to mind their learning. It's an observation we've come up with after many months of writing such features. Marketing is more than advertising, apparently.

In other words, it's not about Career Advice lacking enough career articles to support our motives and make them acceptable by professional standards, but the difficulty is due to the fact that career resources come with a price and not all people find them worth spending for.

To those who've been following us long enough, how will you rate us in terms of featuring career seminars and training opportunities? In our feature about them last week, for instance, did our presentation incline you to at least visit www.learningdb.com.sg and www.jobsdb.com.sg/StaticContent/SG/CareerEvents/default.htm? An even bigger question is, did you attend at least one?

Yes, feel free to use the comments section below to deliver your answers. We'll have them all compiled for taking of notes. It's the new year and we want to correct our faults in this aspect as early as now. Don't worry about us because we're perpetuating this Perfectionist behaviour for the good.

Anyway, January 22 is the date to remember for Career Events fans because our editors at Career Events have chosen that day for Audrey Quek's Unleash Your Image Power Through Dressing & Etiquette. At this point, the FlowerAdvisor vouchers already have owners, but it isn't to late to enlist your name to get counseling from a professional about personal branding and professional imaging. Go now at www.jobsdb.com.sg/StaticContent/SG/CareerEvents/events/Unleash-your-image-power.htm.

How about LearningDB.com? This week is going to be a busy one for the website. Many are scheduled to take place and you most definitely shouldn't miss them. Schedules come in threes. Here's a complete list for your quick reference:

Jan 19 - Energise your E-mail Writing Skills
- Smart Time Management
Jan 20 - Success Skills for Secretaries and Support Staff
- Fundamentals of Corporate Tax
Jan 21 - Emotional Intelligence at Work
- Microsoft Office Productivity Buffet
- Financial Reporting Standard for Small Entities

* Jan 19-21 - Business Goals Workshop
Jan 20-21 - Import & Export Procedures & Documentation

For more information, please contact LearningDB.com at 6861 1000 or email to learning@jobsdb.com.sg. Their individual webpages can be accessed at www.learningdb.com.sg/default.htm#Jan. It'll really mean a lot to us if you sign up.

You can now start incorporating the seminars in your plans for this week because we're not planning on dragging this any longer. But we do have another announcement to make before we sign off for today. Will you listen? We know, you guys will, so...

To those who haven't noticed it yet (and wasn't able to visit us last Friday too), we've already shifted from www.jobsdb.com.sg/Singapore to sg.jobsdb.com. It's for convenience purposes, so you guys won't have a hard time typing our URL anymore. The addresses of our categories are now easier to remember too because of the change.

We've always been insistent on you getting our blog bookmarked, so you'd have instant access to Singapore jobs. This will make things easier. The extra space can now be used for other career concerns and probably, for answering other career questions. Do you have more time to spare? Appreciate the change by browsing sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/NewAdvanceSearch now. Then tell us what you think below.

Looking for a job in Singapore? The latest buzz in the job market, ed. 2.

Many people think that job hunting simply means "writing a resume" and "applying for job ads". It's true that these are parts of the pursuit. But job hunting is much more than announcing to top companies that you're available for hiring.

Our idea is that job hunting should begin with an assessment of one's career preferences and not with the writing of resume.

Job hunting, in its simplest sense, is frustrating. Have you been applying for jobs for quite some time now, but to little avail (even though you're with help from MyJobsDB and this blog)? Random applications can't do anything but frustrate you more, so re-frame your actions with proper self assessment asap.

We're explaining this like its a life-and-death business for a reason. Many job seekers commit the mistake of rushing things out and we want you to cut the habit if you belong to this crowd. That's how much we care.

Our updates on Singapore jobs are known for being quirky, but we're breaking the tradition today, so we can emphasize to our readers (especially the news ones) this point. Can you promise to do this before applying to whatever we'll be putting here in a few minutes?

Anyway, as we've said in the previous edition, the year's just starting so we don't expect to get much on the news until late February or early March. What are we planning to present in the meantime that we're still waiting for recruitment agencies and MOM to release their first quarter findings? Various factors help us in determining which industries to announce over here and in what light. We've been the moderators of this blog for many months already and right now, the status of our research skills are great.

Don't be surprised that we're giving hospitality jobs a special mention today. Since the opening of the IRs until now, food jobs, casino jobs, operation jobs, hotel manager jobs, and tourism jobs have been in our top jobs list, so that's kind of given. Or is it? Kidding aside, we've read that Sentosa has just had a makeover and that more more people are leaving the races in favor of going to the casinos. Surely, those factlets account for something positive in the eyes of job seekers in the hospitality industry.

How about the other industries? Alongside the pillars of Find Jobs (accounting jobs, banking jobs, marketing jobs, education jobs, and IT jobs in Singapore), currently, the spotlight's on advertising jobs, beauty jobs, medical jobs, insurance jobs, PR jobs, and telecoms jobs. Check them all out at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/NewAdvanceSearch.

Other announcements...

Have you already seen the changes on the website? if you haven't noticed it yet, in line with the fact that we're always seeking thing to improve our services, www.jobsdb.com.sg/Singapore has just shifted to being sg.jobsdb.com. What does that mean to you? Take a look at Find Jobs. Now it's easier to remember the web addresses of our job positions! There's no need to type too many letters anymore.

Career Advice has two new articles, one from Hays Singapore and another from our editors. Have you checked them out? What makes a Senior Executive leave? at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/what-makes-senior-exec-le?ID=599 is directed towards employers, but it also has ideas that you can use to carry out your plans better this year.

Why must you read the other one too? According to Hays Singapore's latest press release at sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Top-Employment.htm?ID=597, this year is a good time to pursue your plans for career advancement, perhaps, a salary increase?

sg.openrice.com's photocontest on Facebook at www.facebook.com/openrice.sg?v=app_176850822344620 is still ongoing. Have you submitted an entry already?

What's your dream job?! has just released its December winners at engage.sg.jobsdb.com/dream-job/december-winners/. We'd like to extend our congratulations to ERIC, WEI TING, and ZONG HUAN on this blog. Great job, guys!

And we're increasing the number of winners for January. If you haven't joined yet, do so now!

Projecting professionalism. Some musings.

Hey you, yes you, how long have you been following this blog? If you're one those who've been with us since late November 2009, we don't have anything else to say to you but Thank you! Because you've stayed despite the rants and bluffs, you deserve those words from us. Probably more, even.

But you can wait until we can afford to give you a gift (probably, after we get a salary increase), right? Let's just leave it there. And before anyone raises a point on unfairness, we want to say Thank you to the rest of our followers too, including those who are one month short of qualifying as a loyal audience member or those who have recently just made it a habit to visit jobsdbsingapore.blogspot.com every day for job updates, career tips, among others.

No, we're not officially signing off. You can be sure that we'll be here to give you career advice (whether you like or or not) for at least another more year or even more. So, what's up with the gratuitous mood? Nothing really. This is probably just due to us lacking sleep, but we do mean it.

Both job hunting and career building aren't easy to go about; ergo, your relief is our business.

Heh. Cheesy mottoes aside, the mere fact that you're still reading this is a big deal to us. That in a general scheme of things, speaks a lot about professionalism, the topic we're set to talk about for today. We hope that you continue practising the virtue towards us (because really, we're not perfect writers), plus patience.

We find it very trivial too that we're actually capable of reaching this level of excitement, so are you already satisfied with our explanations for this conspiracy? Because we've already spent more than 300 words just for the heck of it. We should really start with professionalism now, so we won't incur more damage to our already suffering reputation in terms of keeping promises. Are you ready?

Actually, the plan doesn't involve anything too trivial so we don't really have to ask that as if we're afraid to take you by surprise. We're just planning to restate our ideas of professionalism in relation to the two main areas of career, job search and career management.

In today's work world where impressions play an important role, it's important that you know how to project yourself professionally in order to achieve success. This fact especially holds true for job seekers -- job hunting is all about getting the attention of hiring companies and top employers through paper and small conversations.

In terms of resume writing, professionalism can be achieved by following the conventions in writing qualifications. On the other hand, in the context of job interviewing, it's all about dressing according to the company's wardrobe preferences and practising proper conversing decorum.

Career Advice is very rich with career articles about this, so if you find our explanations rather vague, you can go there for further understanding. Sandra Sandu-Reeve's article at www.jobsdb.com.sg/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Career%20Guide?ID=267 is a great reference so you'll end up highlighting what the recruiters are expecting to see. As for job interview, we want you to read (or reread) this article at www.jobsdb.com.sg/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/Career%20Guide?ID=424 by Aimee Young of Robert Walters.

How do we connect professionalism with career management activities like say, requesting for pay raise? It's all about asking only what you deserve and backing the request up with enough research. Andree Mangels of Robert Walters has explained it best in his article at www.jobsdb.com.sg/SG/EN/Resources/JobSeekerArticle/ask-an-expert.htm?ID=489.
